Dalton wins Kingsbridge speaking contest

Last Wednesday morning
the Ontario English Catholic
Teacher's Association .Public
Speaking competition was
held at St. Joseph's Com-
munity School, Kingsbridge.
Three other schools, St.
Mary's, Goderich, St. Jos-
eph's, Clinton and Sacred
Heart, Wingham; also partic-
ipated. The two winners in
the senior division were
Maria Dalton, first, speaking
on Being.. an Aunt; Bill Card,
second, speaking on, Noth-
ing. In the junior division the
two winners were Katherine
Murphy, of St. Mary's, God-
erich, speaking on, The Dis-
abled, and Billy Van Beers,
SL Joseph's, Clinton, speak-
ing on Cucumber. •
The judges were Mrs.
Sally Campeau, Wingham
and George Van Slyck, a
resource teacher at the board
office, Clinton:
The winters will now com-
pete in the O.E.C: f.A. finals
to be held at St. Patrick's
Community School, Dublin,
on Wednesday, March 11.
Eric Courtney of Hamilton
and his friend, Kerry O'Shea
of Mississauga, were visitors
last weekend with , Eric's
parents, Joe and Teresa
Courtney and brothers. They
celebrated Eric's birthday.,
They ,also attended the re-
ception of Eric's cousin,

The Kingsbridge Area
Seniors are becoming active
again with spring in the air
and are planning euchre
parties at the Parish Hall
every Wednesday evening,
beginning this Wednesday at
8.30 p.m.
At the Legion, Public
Speaking competition in
Lucknow on Friday evening,
Linda Van Osch placed sec-
ond in the senior division
group and Bill Card was third
in the senior division. In the
junior division, List Card
placed third.
The Kingsbridge Beaver
group has been underway
since the fall of 1980. The
parents have consented to,
helping through this year.

assisted the Beavers with a
,craft. They made a key chain
holder for their parents.
In. January, most of the
meetings` ere cancelled due
to poor weather conditions.
In February, Glen Olson
brought salt samples for the
boys and gave a report on kbe
workings of the evapora or
plant in Goderich, where he
has been employed for some
time. -fats! and --Barb -Eedy
organized a tobogganing par-
ty at the farm of Mr. and
Mrs. Ross Eedy. Tom Hogan
showed a video tape on the
'Sifto Salt Mine in Goderich
where he is employed.
On February 22nd the
Beavers took part in a service
at Kingsbridge Church to
celebrate Lord -Baden Pow -
ell's birthday during Scout -
Guide Week.
The leaders, . Max and
Helen Riegling and the Beav-
ers appreciate the parents
involvement in the program
and look forward to future
presentations.

The fourth meeting of the
Kingsbridge 4-H club was
held on February 26 at the
home of Diane Van Osch.
Cathy Drennan showed the
girls how to apply infusable
interfacing and each of the --
girls made a sample using
this type of interfacing.

The third meeting 'of the
Kingsbridge,• .Seamstresses
was held on Monday. Feb-
ruary 16 at the home of the
assistant leader, Karen Reu-
rink.
They discussed patterns,
fabrics, pins and shears.
Leader Cathy Drennan talked
about stay stitching, sewing
dars, gathering seams and
finishes with samples used to
describe each. She showed
the girls how to press seams,
darts and gathers properly.
Each member then started
to prepare their samples.

Mr. Tom Webster is a
patient in St. Joseph's Hos-
pital, London, following a
kidney stone operation on°
Friday morning. He was first
admitted to Wingham Hos-
pital early Monday morning
then transferred to London
on Thursday. His daughter,
Mrs. Ettabelle Bradley of
Goderich who is an R.N., has
been with him throughout.
Irvin Storey has been a
patient in Goderich hospital
fox two weeks suffering with
back trouble and Is in
traction.
Mrs. Ray Cook has been a
patient in Victoria Hospital,
London for two weeks.
Leola Chisholm; daughter
of Leonard and Olive Chit -
'holm, is home fora ten day
break from Stratford Cones -
.toga College -of 'Nursing,'
after which she will be
completing her final module
in the ,registered nursing
course. Charlene Rourke,
daughter of .Murray Rourke
and.Joyce Dougherty,
daughter of . Bert and Joan
Dougherty, are also home for
the midwinter 'break.

Maize has returned to her
home following a short stay
in University Hospital, Lon-
don
Mr. and Mrs. Jack . Mason
(Joyce Rivett) of Vanderhoof,
B.C. are proud grandparents
again to, a baby boy, born
February 3. Ron and Wanda
Mason are the parents. Lily
Rivett of Clinton, formerly of
Dungannon, is a proud great

Allan Rivett, a member of
the Lucknow Juvenile hockey
—team! motored by bus to
Wainfleet on Sunday morn-
ing where they played their
first game in the All Ontario
quarter finals.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Smith
motored to Kitchener on Fri-
day to visit with their daugh-
ter. son=in-law and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kilgour.
On Saturday Mrs. Smith's
brother, Mr. Eldon Marrell
and daughter, Anne of Tor-
onto called on them.
Allan Rivett and Duane
Rivett, sons of Jim and
Sandra Rivett, members of
the band at Goderich District
Collegiate, took part in the
concert at the school on
Wednesday evening. On Fri-
day night, Allan took part in
the playathon to raise money
for the exchange trip to

Goderich band will return in

classrooms have been read-
ing the London Free Press.

"'Newspaper Week", we
have been finding out about
the different sections of the
paper..
Extra school activities
have been- added including
broomball, basketball, floor
hockey, bordenball and crab
soccer. The students enjoy
participating.
The overall school table
tennis champion is Wilma
Vandervelde. She became
the champ by winning games
against the champions from
other grades.
On Friday, students went
skating from 2 - 3 p.m. Some
parents came to help tie
skates and to assist the child-
ren who can not skate well,.
As a reminder there is
kindergarten registration on
March 4. There will be no
kindergarten classes that
day.
We are investigating the
building of an adventure or
creative playground. It will
provide children with more
imaginative types of play.
These playgrounds provide a
sandbox, balance beams,
shinny poles, climbers and
wooden structures. It would
also provide facilities for use
by the community including
such acti ities as family re-
unions, off* ics etc. if there is
sufficient interest for the
playground, . we -will set in
motion the necessary plans.
Dungannon United Church
Mr. George Cowan spoke
on, "The Means of Grace",
which are worship of God in
fellowship with other wor-
shippers, prayer and Bible
study.
The children's story was
on keeping our light shining
for Jesus and was illustrated
by use of a flashlight.
The choir sang, "Saviour
Like a Shepherd Lead Us".
Confirmation classes will
begin on Wednesday, March
11 and are expected to con-
tinue weekly - for six weeks
with confirmation to be held
on Easter Sunday.
A manse committee meet-
ing is being held at the
manse on Friday afternoon.
A newly formed youth
group at Dungannon United
Church is sponsoring a card.
party (euchre) on Thursday
evening at Brookside School. .
A bottle drive sponsored'
by the same group will take
place on Saturday morning.
Please leave your bottles out
or have them ready when the
young people call or they can
be left at Snyder's Garage.
