Tip:. If the garment is
made of stretchy fabric or is
cut in the bias, stay stitch or
use seam binding to stabilize

the zipper. Always sew both
sides of the zipper in the
same direction.
The brightly coloured,
cross-checked Scottish tar-
tans_ . had, for hundreds of
ears been the ordina
dress of the Highland people.
Their regional and "clan
loyalties were reflected in
these tartans. English
Parliament outlawed tar-
tans as symbols 'of
resistance, after the English
forces defeated the Highland
Scots at the Battle of
Culloden in 1746.
In 1822,;King George IV
wore a red tartan kilt for a
state visit in Edinburgh. His
intent was diplomatic.
However, it proved embar-
rassing •because the
aur ante chose
to wear was the design that
belonged to the deposed
Scottish royal line — the
-Stewarts.,
le the wake of his visit,
tartans became very
popu ar. as tine Ie people'
wore tartan -kilts, trousers
and tailored jackets. Tar-
tans were even used as
decorations for houses.
Queen Victoria decorated
her second home in
Bahnoral, Scotland in 1853
using tartans for rugs,
chairs, sofas and curtains.
