The steamer Turret. Court
was unloaded at the Western
Canada Flour Mill Cmpany's
elevator this week.
On Saturday afternoon a
serious accident occurred at
the warehouse of W. Levis on
Hamilton Street. Mr. Lavis
had just put in a lift, or
elevator to raise carriages
and machinery from ' the
ground floor to the first floor.
The lift was being tested
when three young girls ran
into the warehouse and
seeing it moving, jumpecl'on,
. three received
lacerations and fractures
when the platform canted
downward throwing them to
the floor with great force.
Robert McLean left on
Tuesday last week with a car
load of fine heavy draught
horses which he is taking to
Winnipeg for sale'.
Two more carloads ef
large cedar poles arrived at
the dokoh Saturday for the
piling of the CPR track along
the bank from the foot of
Waterloo Street to the office

They *ere very fortunate a. being able

said he wouldn't have any trouble finding,
znorehelp.'
"In the past several months, we had
more than 50 pesons, mostly yojmg people,
in looking for a job.
. Mr. Reid is very optimistic that the
. pMnes will sell well, despite the sagging
economy; "At $2,500 retail, the dealers say
they are very, reasonably priced,
especially when you consider that a good
used piano sells for around $2,000.
In fact, Mr. Reid doesn't expect to be
able ..to -keep up with the demand,
especially during the heavy buying months
of NovemberandDecember.
He,said it's just too expensive to built
ieierathundred pianos ahead and have to
pay interest on the money borrowed to
manufacture them. "We don't have the
storage space anyway since Selling off the
other wing of the factory to a local
businessman, Bill Fleming."
So far, the partners haven'thad any help
from any government, although they are
seeking funding from • the Ontario
Developmentc-Orporation.
.COinpeting. head-on with the cheaper,.
Tess produced Japanese pianos, which,
presently have the lions, share of the ."
rnarket, will be n problem, Mr. Reid said.
"Our overheads . are lower, we have a
dedicated and enthusiastic work force, and
a loyal dealerhetwork," Mr. Reid said.
He said they would concentrate on one or
two popular models of :quality built,
reasonably_ priced pianos: "We do not
intend to compete with every size and style
of instrument, we just can't dolt," he said.
Parts of the pianos come from all' over
the world, including, the United' States,
Germany, England, and evenJapan; ,
"It's cheaper to pay..the tariff on those
parts, than to try and get therm made in
Canada," Mr. Reid said and noted that
because of the economy of scale, a
Canadian Manufacturer just wouldn't find
it worth' his' while to tool up fOr such a
small run. •
What does the company need most of all'
at this point; he was asked? :, •
"#our .prayers," he answered with a
smile. •
