The Goderich Signal-Star, 1981-02-25, Page 111 Mighty three reign supreme The might triumvirate of the Goderich • Industrial League continues to reign supreme over its realm with only five weeks left to go in the season. The terrible threesome 'of the Foresters, the AM, G '"`kC's''- and Local' 1863 all won their' twelfth contest last week but in markedly different ways. The talented Foresters totally domi"ed their luckless opponents and downed the 'Teacher Ink conglomerate 11 to 2. Faye "Ace" Ribey and Bennis Lebrun proved to be the edge of victory both in the curling contest as well as irthe card competition which followed:. Elaine Bertrand continued to perform expertly in a losing effort against one of the • league's dynamos. The AM&G "GC's came face to face with their colleagues, the Hospital No. 1 team, and the shootout was as exciting as expected. Elmer Taylor and Jim Rourke curled meticulously in an admirable demon- stration of •administrative and medical unity but the "boys from the•lab" were not being denied their victory. :: Peter Bergin:.: diagnose the Hospital's. weaknesses; Dennis. Miskie and . Phil Turner set the end up and lab chief Ron Klages supplied the coup de grade to score a big four points in the seventh end and blow a very even - --match-wide--open.- Although - the seventh end was the finishing blow to the Hospital' No. 1 team it was two delicate andiperfectly played -shots-by--Klages -in the- fifth end.. that prevented the hardluck Hospital. crew from obtaining their much -desired ' upset. While the Foresters glided easily to victory and the. "GC's" coasted the last few ends to their triumph, Local 7863 had to claw and crawl to thdir win. In fact, after four ends the mighty union, foursome appeared on their way to an ignominious defeat. A ` superb overall team effort in the fifth changed that, outlook however as the unidn reps scored four to tie their match with the Huron Haven threesome. The spirited Huron Haven, playing without their injured vice -skip John Kuran, bounced right back from the disasterous fifth and led by one in the final end before Local 1863 skip Jack Kellough made a tricky takeout and scored two for the come -from -behind victory 8 t 7. Mr. Kellough and Co. were not the only team to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. For much of their .contest against the Lady Golfers, the Charhpion Office Silver Brooms appeared on their way to their first elusive victory. But fate can be cruel! So can the Lady Golfers! • Behind the excellent team performance and the in- spired leadership of Paul Mulligan the Champion Office controlled most of the encounter but took only a slim one point lead into the - final end. Lynn Todgam made her shots; Penny Peters copied Lynn; Kay Duncan copied . Lynn and Penny and Sue White copied Lynn, Penny and Kay. When the copycats were finished so were the hopes of the Silver Brooms as they lost a heartbreaker 6 to 5. •• While one group of ladies were playing the a heavy another feminine foursome did all they could to endear themselves to their op- ponents. The kind and overly generous LadyForesters led by three with only two ends to go in their match with the GDCI Teacher No. 2 con- tingent In the seventh end, the Lady foursome was hit by an uncontrollable urge to make the game.close and Oen the end ended they had satisfied their desire. The game was tied. Unable to throw off this self-destructive tendency the Lady Foresters were -unable- to prevent the Teachers from stealing a single point and the contest in the final end. For most of . the. game, Eleanor Fisher and Vicki. Culbert were anything but .nice• to their adversaries as -*-they--made--both--takeouts and draws with cold-blooded efficiency. But they, were just unable to stay mean the whole game. • • It is --fitting. • thht- the Teacher star of the game should be their only female member:-- Sheileyy--"Boom.- •Boom" Warr was par- ticularly sharp when double takeouts were required. The struggling' GDCI Teacher No. 1 .team also chalked up .a victory over the Champion Sales .Office .8to 6. Playing on very un- predictable ice, the match swayed back and forth with five shots being made by both 'teams. Bill Hayward was very strong for the unfortunate Salescrew.while Barb Ottewell was equally skillful for the ultimate victors. The real star of the con- test, however, was Teacher vice -skip Del. Almeida who made double takeouts or quiet drawswith equal dexterity. In the final- match of the night; the Huron Health Unit showed no mercy to Fisher Builders as they defeated them 11 to 3. Particularly lacking in the spirit of Florence Nightingale was Health Inspector Jack MacKinnon as he _refused to 'miss throughout the conflict. The Fisher carpenters were able to nail down only two ends despite some fine curling by Sim Bell and Ray Fisher. . Joanne Jasper is obviously getting.. geared.: up :the political cheering section as we watched her jumping up and down encouraging her team to curl their best. Georgia, thanks to her "connections" brought a box to carry home, her prizes. Pee Wees get pressure in first. The Goderich Lion •Pee Wees started OMHA playoffs on Saturday February .21 against Petrolia at the local arena. It was a very exciting contest which the local lads lost 5-4. Goderich started the scoring at 2:24 of the first period on a goal by Darren Doak The first period ended irr a 2 - 2 tie with the second Goderich goal being scored by Chris Sideris. In the second period, Petrolia scored one unanswered goal giving them a 3 - 2 lead at the end of the middle period. The third period was very exciting with each team scoring two goals. Sunday, February 22 round the Lions travelled to Petrolia for the second game of their play-off series. rhe Petrolia youths played very strong offensively toga in a 9 -1 victory over the locals. Third place was won by Phyl`Durst; SandyBraid arid' Gert Wilson. Gert performed one of those .impossible sots by coming between two rocks that left no breathing space, and knocking out the opposing team's shot rock. Gert and Sandy were so excited that they hopped around the ice until the end of the game. This so un- settled the opposition, that they were not able to recover. Joanne Hood joined the party to thank everyone for looking after the Jitney for her on 'short notice. It seems that, a week ago, Joanne was practicing an out turn • with her car and puttoo much spin on it. She claims that she would have made the shot if she had. had a sweeper. . Joanne's husband who is very supportive of Joanne's activities, had a pin put in his arm this week to strengthen his arm so that he can be her sweeper next time round. It must be noted that sofa'. the ladies have three teams entered into the BATTLE OF THE SEXES BONSPIEL. The GDCI girls are thinking that they might be the fourth team. No men's teams as, yet. They seem to,be a little shy. Come on fellows. Gather some courage and join the fun. • GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1961—PAGE U GDCI girls advance to HP Last Wednesday, Maitland Country Club was the site of curling playdowns to determine which boys' and girls' curling teams will be able to compete in the Huron -Perth championships to be held this Friday in Exeter.
