'Special Needs" program being
conducted at Vanastra Centre
The International Year of
the Disabled Person is now
underway and the Vanastra
Recreation Centre is gearing
up for a very exciting year.
The Centre is continuing
its "Special Needs" pro-
gram for individuals and
groups who, at the present
time are unable to fit into
regular aquatics, fitness and
recreational programs. The
clientele presently includes
mentally and physically
disabled persons, senior
citizens, and arthritic ,and
stroke patients. Both
children and adults are en-
couraged to participate, All
programs are geared as
closely as possible to each in-
dividual's specific needs.
As well as "Special
Needs". programs being of-
fered at the Centre, a Com-
munity Development project
has been issued through
government funding for a six
month time period. This
Outreach project will make
a positi a contribution to the
commun1y by providing
recreation and leisure ac-
tivities to individuals and
groups who, otherwise wotdd
not be able to get out and
participate. •
A large 'area ' of -Huron
County,, bounded by
Goderich, Wingham, Dublin
and Exeter will be covered
by the project.
The success of this pro-
gram would be to eventually
integrate the involved in-
dividuals and groups into a
regular 'program, where
benefits of mental and
physical well-being would be
generated.
Bob Marshall is the co-
ordinator of "Special
Needs" at the Vanastra
Recreation Centre. A
graduate from the Universi-
ty of Waterloo, and original-
ly from Kirkton, he has had
considerable experience in
recreation . for "Speeial -
Needs" groups.
Sandi Fremlin is the pro-
gram co-ordinator of the
Outreach Project. Sandi, a
Clintonian, has worked in
various capacities at the
Recreation Centre and with
the Day Care Program at
Huronview Nursing Home in
Clinton.
Both Bob and Sandi
welcome your support and
suggestions in order to make
a special contribution to the
International Year of the
Disabled Person. For more
information regarding these
programs, please feel free to
contact them at the
Vanastra Recreation Centre,.
