Keeping you
in stitches
BY
SALLY MacEWAN
TIP: To prevent stret-
ching ' when stitching a
woven fabric to a knit,
always have the woven layer
on top.
Tweed is an ancient Scot-
tish fabric. Villages near the
English border- situated on
the banks of, the River
Tweed, produced the nubby
herring -bone ,, and hounds-
" tooth checks,
The local cloth of the Outer
Hebrides Islands, off the
Scottish coast was the
wannest and the most
durable of the tweeds. This
woollen fabric was . called
Harris Tweed, after the
name of the main islands
Southern district. It was
completely hand-woven. A
farmer would clip the fleece
from his sheep and wash it in
'rain water. The wool was
dyed from wild plants picked
from the moors and rocky
shores. The cloth was woven
on hand , looms in • the
farmers' living rooms. The
neighbours were then called
to help with the process
known as waulking. It was
similar to the Canadian
barn -raising or perhaps the
pioneer _quilting bees., The
tweed was soaked in am-
monia and soap suds. Then,
it was kneaded against scrub
boards" by hands. or even,
feet. The cloth was then
strung up to dry lathe wind:
Tweed became the most
popular " fabric in England's
wool making history. People
clamoured for bolts of the
rugged tweed that had the
scent of mist, heather and
peat smoke of the Highlands.
