Champion displays at Conexpo
"One thing's for sure —
Conexpo proved that our
machines, are atleast on a
.par, if not better, than
anything the competition
.had on disp1y at the
t. Astrodome. We don't have to
take a backseat to anyone,"
was the way Bruce Sully,
Champion's chairman of the
board, summed up the com-
pany's presence at Conexpd
81.
That Mr. Sully's. remarks,
are well-founded can be.
judged by the interest shown
and comments made by the
thousands, of visitors to the
Champion display during the
six days the company's
latest products were shdwn.
at the Astrodome in Houston,
Texas.
Billed as the largest equip-
ment show ever staged in the,
Western Hemisphere, Con -
expo 81 ran from January 25
to January 30 at the Astrodo-
main complex. Some 267 ex-
hibits highlighted the latest
in construction equipment,
methods and accessories for
every segment of the con-
struction industry.
Thousands of items, ranging
in weight from a tew pounds
to hundreds of tons, were
shown by manufacturers.
Total value of equipment on
display was estimated - at.
$500 million.
Held every six years, Con -
expo is sponsored by the
Construction Ind,ustry
Manufacturers Association
(CIMA) . CIMA represents
more than 200 manufac-
turers of construction
machinery and related com-
ponents used in general con-
struction, housing, road -
building, surface mining,
energy and forestry.
CIMA members generate
$17 billion in annual sales,
with about half of this going
to non -U.S. markets. Of the
100,000 visitors to Conexpo
81, anestinated`20,000 came
from overseas. . ' -
Conexpo i a unique oppor-
tunity for both .buyer and
manufacturer.. Very seldom
does the buyer get the
chance to 'see - and •ex-
amine closely — such an ar-
ray of competitive products
under one roof. And for the
manufacturer, it's not often
that he gets the chance to
show his product to so many
potential customers at one
time.
Conservative estimates
place the number of visitors
to the Champion booth at
50,000. It was manned by
sales staff from all regions
as well as senior manage-
ment.

designed instrument and cir-
cuitbreaker panel, and the
new low -maintenance
hii ghli-ft system.
Full use was made of
audio-visual presentations in.
the booth. Action films show-
ing the 100T and "the 700
Seriesin operation drew
larg6- • audiences and
stimulated many inquiries.
And telephone handsets in
the booth provided a record-
ed message, in English,
French and Spanish, on
Champion and its products.
It took Champion three
years and a lot of hard work
to prepare -.for Conexpo 81.
To ensure display space in
the heart of the show — the
prestigious Astrodome itself
and not in an annex or even
outdoors reservations
were made two years in ad-
vance.. The new designs in-
corporated in the display
machines had to be finalized,
manufactured and tested.
Up-to-date literature and
audio -visuals had to be
designed, written and pro-
duced.. There were a
thousand -and -one details to
take care of to make sure
that everything would go
smoothly.
A week before the show
opened, billboards were put
up at three strategic loca-
tions...in the Houston '.area.
Prepared months in ad-
vance, they tied in with the
"Be a Champion Lover"
lapel button used as
giveaways. Later, during the
show, some 30,000 buttons
were pinned on visitors to
the booth. In this way,
everyone who sported a but-
ton , became, in effect, a
walking billboard for the
company.
