Jim Moore, Goderich
Recreation Director, is
resigning his post here and
has been hired from 40 ap-
plicants as director of parks
and recreation for the city of
St. Thomas.
Moore will be starting his
pewob on February 23,
leavingthe town Nit over
two weeks to find a
replacement. A special
hiring committee of the
recreation board will screen
applicants and make a
recommendation to council.
Chairmanof the
recreation board, Bob
Cornish, told the. Signal -Star
that the town is losing an
"outgoing" man who has
taken the trouble to go out
and meet people. "Hehas
implemented Several events
such as the fun run, bicycle
race, and sportsfest, ' said
Cornish.
Cornish feels that the town
is going to have to offer goad
money for the job if it wants
someone with sufficient
experience.
Moore came to Goderich in
March of 1979 from
Palmerston.
Moore was, only the second
recreation director em-
ployed by the town of
Goderich. He was hiredd by'a
committee of the recreation
board -following the
resignation of Mike Dymond
in February 1979. Dymond
left Goderich to assume the..
position of parks and
recreation director for the
town-of-Wallaeebur--g.

County agrees to museum
Huron County Council has approved in principle the
relocation of the wheelhouse of the Shelter Bay lake
freighter to an on -shore site at the Goderichharbor:
The freighter, owned by the Goderich Elevator and
Transit Company, is to be donated to the county and
the Town of Goderich for use as a Marine Museum.
It is estimated that the removal and transport of
the wheelhouse will cost between $25,000 and $30,000.
This cost is to be shared by the county and the town:
Elsa Haydon, chairman of the Goderich Waterfront
Committee, spoke to council at the January 29
meeting, asking that the county approve the project
in principle. •
Deputy -reeve Bob Allen said that the boat will be
unloaded toward the end of February and moved to
a».area'ofthe'dock where removal can be made. He
said the freighter cannot remain in the docking area
• indefinitely or it will block traffic in the. harbor.
Allen concluded that the town wanted the county to.
approve the project in principle to assure Goderich
town council that the county will share in the cost of
theproject.
. County council passed a motion approving the
addition of $15,000 to the county's property committee
budget which will permit the project to continue.
it is proposed that the grounds will be maintained
by the town and the county will be responsible for
preparing and manning the exhibit, which would be
open for the summer months, probably from 9 a.m.
until 9 p.m.
Plans are for the wheelhouse and the control room
of the ship to be relocated on shore. It is intended that
every available instrument and mechanical
navigational aid be part of the display to generate
further interest.
A set of cabins below the wheelhouse known as the
captain's , office and quarters, as well as the
.passenger quarters, will also be included so that

many items presently scattered around the Huron
County Pioneer Museum can be.located in the Marine
Museum to create an interesting and historically
informative display. This will also present the op-
portunity for expanding the collection.
No assistance. until
1981 budget passed
Goderich Town Council tabled its motion Monday
night to help out the financially troubled Trotters
Association with a$5,000'grant and a_$5,000loan until
its 1981 budget is passed, probably in April,
Mayor Harry Worsell, Councillor John Doherty -and
Deputy -Reeve, Bob Allan voted against tabling the
two by-laws granting the trotters $5,000 and loaning
them. $5,000. Before voting to put off the by-law until a
budget is passed, council voted down a motion that
would have tabled the by-laws' third reading for one
week. -
Finance Chairman Reeve Dun Wheeler said that
"we just can't afford to be giving out $10,000 right
now."
