s‘ NlacEnroe's lefthanded' serve can, at
times, be unstoppable and he loves playing
at Wimbledon, wher'e he first burst on the
tennis scene, reaching the semi-finals
unseeded. 'It will be interesting to see if
fatherhood ,and marriage [ in that order )
has taken:some of the edge off of his game.
It certainly has not improved his court
. demeanor.
My dark horse pick this year is
American Tim Mayotte, who consistantly
reaches the quarter -finals and has made
the semis. Mayotte'is playing the best ten-
nis' of his life, and Wimbledon is his
tournament.
Carling Bassett, Helen Kelesi and Mar-
tin Laurendeau are the only Canadians at
the tournament. Bassett has neither the
size nor the power to win on grass but has
an easier draw than Kelesi, who must play
number eight seed Mandela Maleeva of
Bulgaria in the first round. I admit I know
nothing about Laurendau, but I wish him
the best of luck.
Spoonerisms:Readers seem to feel I
should call my: column Spoonerisms. 1 am
happy just knowing there were people who
read my column. I will wait one more
week, befn.re I make a decision on the title.
For thos0 who thought the prizes I was
offering for a title were a little cheap let
me set the record straight. 'My undying
gratitude means I will name my first child
after you 1 depending nn gender and my
wife's approval ). As for the tour of Editor
Sykes' office, here are just some of the
comments from people who have previous-
ly seen the sights.
"Imagine a wet liar and 0 private bath,"
said one lady who made the trip from
Vancouver.
"Is that a real Renoir on the wall," ask-
ed a man as he inspected the painting with
a magnifying glass. .
I am both happy and sad to see baseball
great Tom retire, Sad, because the
game is losing one of the best pitchers
ever. Happy, because he knew he would no
longer be effective and left before he would
he an embarassment.
For those of you who don't like tennis
