•"Money best spent is to travel. That is
where you get, your knowledge," said
Vickie Crooke bf Goderich, who celebrated
her 102 birthday, Sunday.
Mrs: Crooke was born May 24, 1885 in
Clinton and has travelled .and lived
throughout Europe and England. Her hus-
band, Alvin, passed aw:ay several years
ago.
Her father was' a band musician and a
Carver whp.worked for a piano and organ
business in Clinton. ' He later moved to
,Goderich and started the .Goderich Piano
and Organ Company. Mrs. Crooke does
not remember the exact date, but said she
was, just a little girl. Mrs. Crooke lived on
her own until she w•gc•almost 100 -years old
and now lives at the Maitland,MVlanor Nurs-
ing Home.
Her father gave her an appreciation for
music and she went on to study at the
Leeds College of Music, London.
Mrs. Crooke,, who does not care for
modern; music but still listens to the
classics, said she earned her money as a
violinest with the Hamilton Symphony
Orchestra.
When asked what was the most amazing
thing she has seen during he life, she at
first appeared confused by the question. I
thought airplanes were pretty amazing
when they' first came out, but then they
started having accidents, she said.
Police solve
theft of food
Goderich Police have arrested two
young offenders and charged them with
the break-in and theft of $730 worth of food
and lottery tickets from Shanahan's
Foodland on May 3.
The youths were arrested the following
day and $566 worth of stolen goods were
recovered. Investigating officer was Con-
stable George Londsbary.
Goderich police also arrested a young of-
feder in connection with the theft of a,
Wank chequebook from a Lighthouse
Street residence on May 19.
The youth attempted to cash one of the
cheques at a local bank the following day,
but left the bank when the teller went to
verify the cheque.
Police were contacted and arrested the
• youth. Charges of theft under $1,000 and ut-
tering a forged document were laid by in-
vestigating officer Constable Peter Mason.
Hearings on
abandonment
considered
The Canadian Transport Commission
has informed Goderich Town Council it is
considering holding public' hearings into
the proposed abandonment by Canadian
Pacific CCP ) Rail, of the Guelph to
Goderich portion of its line.
The railway is considering abandoning
rail service in this area, because of a drop
in usage in recent years. Goderich Town
Council has received several letters from
local industries, informing them of their
objection to the proposed abandonment.
The Railway Transport Committee is in
the process of determing if the branch line
in question is uneconomic and should be
a bandoned.
In arriving at this decision, the commit-
tee must take into consideration all mat-
ters that, in its opinion are relevant to the
public interest, including: effect on ship-
pers served by –the line, alternative
transportation facilities, existing or poten-
tial resources of the area arid probable
future transportation needs.
Under the Railway Act, the committee
may, if it deems necessary, hold a public
hearing in the area served by the subject
branch line. A determination on that has
not yet been made, but council has inform-
ed the committee it wishes to participate
in any hearings which may be held.
