One year after their son came
to Canada, the Kuiper's packed
a few belongs, their other four
children and boarded a boat
headed for Canada.
The journey took 10 days, and
luckily for Mr. and Mrs.
Kuiper, neither they nor their
children experienced -any
seasickness.
"The boat was nice, but it
was stormy weather," added
Mrs. Kuiper. "Case's plate
would move when he was trying
to eat- because of the waves.
He'd try to eat and his food
would slip away ! "
The Kuipers still have some
of the possessions they brought
over on the boat. There is a
chair in their sun porch and a
clock in the living room to re-
mind them of the old, country.
Although the Kuipers came to
Canada to keep their family
together, they did leave behind
Family of
seven become 63
family in Hague. Mr. Kuiper
left five sisters and one brother
in Holland and Mrs. Kuiper left
one brother and two sisters.
After the 10 day journey was
over, the boat carrying the
Kuipers docked in Halifax.
From there the family of six
took a train to Montreal and
then went on to Toronto.
"We went to Toronto where
our oldest son was waiting for
us with a car to bring us to Clin-
ton," said Mrs. Kuiper.
Mr. Kuiper's first job in
Canada was on • Fred Mid-
dleton's farm by the Bayfield
Road where he worked for two
years.
