More anglers than ever will come to the
Goderich area to fish but that won't make
Warren Watt's day any longer – his bait and
tackle shop is already open 24 hours.,
Watt, owner of Goderich Bait and Tackle,
said local efforts to stock and rehabilitate
streams has made the area one of the best
for sport fishing.
The fishing season on area rivers and
streams officially began on midnight April
24.
Watt, who has been in the business fur five
years, said at the peak of the sea' on, during
the summer, more than 200 customers per
day will visit his shop on the weekend to pur-
chase minnows, spawn ( salmon eggs ),
worms and other bait and tackle.
The entire Maitland river, he said, is a
good place to fish and it is even better
around the Benrniller Falls area where the
fish l salmon and trout I run about six to
eight pounds. However, the Nine Mile River
near Port Albert is a better place for the fish
to spawn and they are a little bigger there at
10-12 pounds. To catch salmon Watt
recomends using spawn.
Watt also sells the new Ontario Resident
Sport Fishing Licence and feels the licence
will help improve the fishing even more.
The annual licence came into effect Jan 1
1987 and costs $10 for people aged 18-65. The
licence is manditory for those who wish to
fish but children under 18 may fish on their
parents licence, but the limit restrictions
still apply. An angler may only catch five
fish f salmon or trout) on one licence. There
is no limit on perch. A four-day licence is
also available for $5. Visitors to Ontario
must pay $33 for a licence.
This is the first year for the licence and
fishermen generally approve of. the licence
as long as the money is pttt back into the
sport, said Watt.
According to the Ministry of Natural
Resources, the money is going to*•ards ex-
pansion of the Community fisheries Involve-
ment Plan, improving fisheries habitat, the.
culture of Atlantic, salmon and Skamania
steelhead trout fo,stocking .in the Great
lakes and to hire more Conservation Of-
ficers and fisheries technicians 'across :the
province. . The licence fee also `helps
rehabliatate streams, restock lakes and
upgrade hatcheries.
The Ontario Fisheries Advisory Council, •
made up of concerned citizens, is being ap=
pointed by the gverrient to advise the
minister of Natural resources on fisheries
priorities and the level' of fisheries
expenditures.

By truce Baker
OK Guys, Let's play ball! What a
familiar sounding phrase in this little town
called Goderich .:. A town of under 8000
that has produced 25. men's slowpitch
teams boasting close ta500 members. The
beauty of it, or troublewith it :.. depending
on yofir point of view ... is that the growth
is not, finished! It is only held at 25 for this
year:'..
Lack of diamond space has, for a long
time, been a serious issue. It is now at the
critical stage. With. 300 games scheduled
from' May 10 to July 30 and only 15 empty
spots available for rain -outs, we could be
neaded for ,trouble. Fortunately, the
league `is close to agreement with other
parties, on the construction of two or three
,new diamonds ... all south of town. If and
when this goes through, we will need

year we will be publishing the Goderich and Area

volunteer work parties!
With, a league this size, cooperation and '
.support are 'the key ingredients. To date
we have the first, but the jury is still out on
the latter. Hopefully the response to the
spring dance on May 9 at Saltford, is not an
indication of, support. ,Tickets to that are
still available this week from Rick
Duckworth. After that, they will be
available for the dance only, at the door ...
you•rnust have a ticket from Rick to get in
on . the meal. A dance and lunch for
$10/couple is not an expensive outing. The
league can support projects like this now,
or pay higher entry fees in the future. It is
your choice. Think about it again and get
your tickets now.
Enough business . fpr now ... let's . get
back to ball talk. The diamonds have .been
busy with exhibition play this past week.
The strong teams still appear to be strong, •
the. weaker teams are getting better .and.
some of the new teams are .rather im-. •
pressive. Last year was very Competitive
and this year appears to be'even more so!
The three divisional championships are.all
up for grabs ... and it bins this Sunday
with six games. Yes. The boys of summer
are back and ,ready to play. Be sure -to
catch the game summaries and standings
each week ih this column'
