The Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-05-06, Page 26THEATRE REVIEW
BY PATRICK RAFTIS
Even fora group of highly -trained pro-
fessional thespians, to undertake the stag-
ing of Arthur Miller's intensely dramatic
play "Death .of a Salesman," is an ex-
tremely ambitious undertaking. The sub-
ject matter of this play is sa disturbing
that, unless superbly -executed, every line
`_
spoken can add more melancholy to an a1r.:-.`• growing sense of depression
'al:Q. the audience.
This is what made the Goderich District
Collegiate Institute Drama Club's recent
production of the play so enjoyable. Ex-
tremely animated and powerful -perfor-
mances on the part of all the main
characters managed to bring all the play's
elements: drama, tension, humor and
even some optimism, into sharp focus,
The choice of thi's play, ° staged last
weekend in the GDCI auditorium, was in
keeping with the drama club's tradition of
avoiding the easy way to an audience's
heart (light comedy 1, instead taking 1;he
more perilous route of classic theatre. In-
volvement in a production such as this one,
or the groups's staging of "The Crucible,"
a few years back,: allows these young ac-
tors and actresses the opportunity to ex-
perience first-hand . the hard work and
dedication neccessary to touch an au=
dience through their performance.
, Willy Loman, the central figure in the
play, was portrayed with bold sensitivity
by Shawn Vincent. Loman is a 68 -year-old
travelling salesman, who is shafted by the
company he has served for 36 years. First
put on straight commission (no salary )
then fired outright, they play finds Loman
mired in •a. pool of suicidal, 'self -
"examination, not aided by advancing
senility brought on by a crippling •job
fatigue that would be known as "burn out"
today.
His two grown sons, Biff and Happy,
played by Brad Milburn and Wayne Mac -
Vicar respectively, are caught between
wanting to help Willy and resolving their
long-unfufilled need for his approval. B9th
Milburn and MacVicar do an admirable
job, in demanding roles which require
them to age from erstwhile teenagers to
troubled young men, •and back ,again,
several times.
Jo -Anne Taraba, as Willy's wife .Linda,
also has a challenging part. Her character
un.derg'oes a .remarkable metamorphisis,
from quiet condescensionin conversations
with Willy, to autliorative force when deal-
ing with her irresponsible offspring.
John King, a fixture of GDCI produc-

young actor .who gives an interesting por-
trayal as Charley, Willy's successful
neighbor who understands the salesman's
plight and even his frustrating refusal to
accept the help Charley offers.
Notable performances were also turned
in by Jeff Scott, as Loman's coldly
businesslike employer and Murray Lane,
as the mysterious apparition of Willy's
brother Ben.
The rest of the east: Jan Davidson,
Arletta Martin, Julie Kalbfeisch, David
Stewart, Alexander Stukenburg, Heidi
Hoernig and Melanie"Hollingworth are all
right on target . in their delivery and
depictions.

Gutsy performance!
The fluidity of the plays many scene and
mood changes are a credit to the.efforts•of
director Phillip McMillan.
Aging high . school students to give a
credible appearance of middle -to -old -age
can be no easy task, so'the make up crew
for this' production obviously had their
work cut, out for them. Their successful of-,
forts added to the overall enjoyment of the.
play, as did the fine work of the set, sound,
props and lighting crews.
The quality of this production truly
reflects a dedication to the dramatic arts
that is truly commendable at the secon-
dary school level. Thisproduction was a
winner by any standards.
