Renovations to" the 2nd PlooLS East
obstetrical unit at Alexandra Maaifie and
General Hospital will "give us an
obstetrical area that is, in concept and
physical structure, one of the best" accor-
ding to Dr. David Walker, chief of
obstetrics at the hospital.
Construction on 2nd Floor renovations,
the most extensive of the three projects,
began Monday and will continue for the
next 16 to 20 weeks. Involved in this pro-
ject are the reconstruction of patient
rooms, a new birthing room, fancily sitting
room and the relocation of the nursery.
Once renovations are completed, the
new obstetrical area will be more private,
self-contained and quiet. ••
• Plans to change the obstetrical area
have been considered for the past few •
years.
"We've been seriously thinking of this
for at least five years, although we have
been working on the concept for the past
seven or eight years." Dr. Walker said.
In 1982, the hospital sent out question-
naires to all of the families, whose babies
were delivered at the hospital the previous
• year. This questionnaire was designed to
ask for comments and suggestions regar-
ding the delivery and recovery areas for
mothers and babies. Hospital represen-
tatives also met with Women Today to see
what their concerns were regarding
changes to the obstetrics area.
"We have been able to incorporate all
the ideas into the present plan," Dr.
Walker said.
The new plan for the 2nd floor obstetrics
unit includes changes to patient rooms,.the
construction of a new birthing room,
nursery and family sitting room.
• TEMPORARY SET-UP
Because most of the 2nd east floor will be
closed during the renovation process,.
• (including the labour and delivery room,
as well as patients' rooms), temporary
locations for a delivery room, nurseryand
mothers' rooms have been established.

nurse's station due to renovations which began Monday on the floor. Renovations are not
expected to be complete until September or October 1987. (photo by Lou -Ann Hope)
"We are setting up one room as a bir-
thing room in the emergency area with the
capability •of doing all types of deliveries,"
Dr. Walker explained.
"Patients being admitted will go direct-
ly to that room. Labour and delivery will
be in the same room starting today," 'add-
ed Marg Robinson, head nurse of 2nd east
obstetrics.
Although labour and delivery will take
place downstairs throughout the duration
of the construction project, the birthing.
, bed will still be used. Recovery rooms and
a nursery area will be temporarily.located
on 2nd west. Robinson noted the rooming -
in process, in which babies, spend the ma-
jority of the day with their mothers, will
still, be followed.
Everything remains the same and un-
changed in the way of care, Robinson
explained.
OUTCOME OF RENOVATIONS.
Once the 2nd floor renovations are com-
plete, the obstetrical area will be more
private, self-contained and quiet.
"I will"create a more -family type area.
The Whole change will equal a a family-
oriented obstetrical area," Dr. Walker
said.
Renovations will not affect the present
delivery room (for patients who need an
operating setting) located on 2nd east. Thee
major change will be the expansion of the
birthing room.
The room, located on the extreme end of
.2nd east, will be expanded and made as
home -like as possible.
The birthing bell, which is presently us-
edin at least 50• per cent of deliveries,
makes labour and delivery on the the same
comfortable bed possible without the prior.'
necessity of moving to another room or
bed. However, the delivery room is vir-
tually across the hall should operating pro-
cedures be deemed necessary, Robinson
noted.
Dr..Walker noted with the birthing room.
being made home -like, the sterile at-
mosphere of a hospital is avoided.
"It will certainly.. increase my enjoy-
ment of deliveries. It is that much more
enjoyable once you have the proper sur-
roundings and are able to provide women
with the kind of delivery they are wanting
— one with the most comfort and -safety,"
he said.
Dr. Walker also noted a major change in
the postpartum area once renovations are
completed.
Four rooms in this area will become
private •rooms, meaning there will be only
one patient per room instead of the
previous practice of two mothers sharing
the room. Each room will also be equipped
withp rivate washroom and shower
facilities. This, Dr. Walker noted, pro-
videsa comfortable atmosphere for.
families and extra comfort for the
rooming -in procedure.
The new. nursery will be located directly
across from the postpartum area. -
"This relocation provides a closer more
accessible nursery for moms and
families," Dr. Walker said.
"The idea is •that actually parents can
have free access to the nursery asfar as
going in and caring for their baby," Robin-
son added.
FAMILY ORIENTED '
Included in the renovation project is the
creation of a family sitting room, which
will also be used as a teaching area.
@`Patient - family education is 'large
part after delivery. We hope to have some
• educational equipment, suck ' a ; audio
visual aids, available," Robinson
explained.
She noted the hospital is becoming old-
fashioned in caring for new mothers and
their, families.
For example, she said, years ago
brothers and sisters used to be able to visit
their mothers and new babies. However,,.•
that changed when hospitals became strict
with visiting policies and only fathers
(husbands) were allowed, in to see mom
and baby. Now, Robinson said, the father
can stay through the labour and delivery if
he wishes and family members and
. visitors can visit at their convenience
(although Robinson does encourage
visitors to come only during the evening
visiting hours).
"We've been providing this kind of care
but we haven't had the proper physical
structure," she said.
BENEFICIAL PROJECT
Although the renovation project is ex-
treme in its intentions to revamp the 2nd
floor, Dr. Walker sees few problems aris-
ing in the next few months.
"We hope to still provide full obstetrical
care throughout the renovation process,"
Dr. Walker said.
He noted the project will provide the
