Goderich Harboumires will be featured
at Sound of Goderich concert May 13
--The Sound of Goderich '87 is to be held on
Wednesday, • May 13th at 8 p.m. in the
auditorium of Knox Presbyterian Church,
Goderich.
• Featured in this year's concert will be the
Goderich Harbouraires under the direction
of Lorne Dotterer, with Paul Howe as piano
accompanist. During 1986 the Harbouraires
celebrated their 40th anniversary. Some of
their charterinembers are still singing With
then, three of whom are 'Harold Bettger•,
Bill 'floss and Harry Westlake. Throughout
its existence this fine, all-male choir has had
The s
only two due tors. The urst. was George
Buchanan, who founded this chorus, and
who led them up until his death 10 years ago.
Since then the Harbouraires have :been
under the very capable leadership of Lorne
Dotterer. •
Those attending the Sound of Goderich '87
will hear this choir perform ne,w music that
the members have learned this year for Big
Sings , in Amherst, N.Y., Port Huron,
Michigan and Hamilton, Ontario. This past
winter the Harbour.aires presented their an-
nual Christmas Concert at St., George's
Anglican Church. and participated for :the
33rd consecutive year in the Marindrs' Ser-
vice at Knox Presbyterian' Church. Recent-
ly, they were well received by the audience
attending a concert' at .Rowntree United
Church in. London. This outstanding chorus
of 33 voices would like to encourage the
public to attend what will be the 10th Sound
of Goderich on May 1,3th• • •
Joining the Harbouraires: that evening
will be the Goderich Laketown Band under
.its new. director Bruce Cookson and .the
MacKay Choristers wl'fo are trained 'nnd led
by Irla Stewart. ,
n's rays carpbe harmful in doses
. With Daylight Saving Time you believe
Spring` is here. For many days the winds
have been icy cold, there has been little sun
and heavy storms in Florida.
During March break we had hot days and
warnings were out regarding that first tan
. people were, working on. And there were
many.
. Don't rely on that healthy looking tan to
guard you against they sun's rays as skin
damage . occurs with each exposure.
Avoidanceof sunshine is the most important
deterrent of skin cancer. Fair -skinned peo-
ple. who burn while taking that quick vaca-
tion. jaunt to the 'tropics are likely can-
didates for skin cancer and should have any
moles on. their body closely' monitored.
If you•must work or play in the sun use a
sun screen. The Skin Cancer Foundation
recommends the use of products with an
SPF -sun protection factor- of at least 15.
That means it would take 15 times longer to
cause redness of the skin. Sunscreen should
be -applied every two or three hours or after
swimming. Also, use lip balm with a
blackening agent or you will get a fat .lip.
You are at risk while sailing or skiiing
because sun and snow reflect the sun's rays:.
Skiers ” underestimate the dangers of
overexposure.
Avoid exposure between ,10 a.m. and 2
p.m. The sun's rays passes through the
clouds and are, reflected from snow and
sand. Remember, you must guard against
overexposure, not just exposure. You will
get all the Vita ' D you need in 20 to. 30
minutes. Learn where birthmarks and
moles are located and check them.for size,
color, texture, sensitivity, as well as pain,
discharge and bleeding.

ROUND 'N
ABOUT
With Martha Rathbur°re
Parents , should guard their, little' ones
against sunburn. sunburn triples the risk of
the development of melanoma. Adolescents
who suffered the same before age 20, more
'than doubled the. risk of developing' malig-
nant melanoma.
Dermatologist Dr. Alan Dottner of Con-
necticut stresses, "Avoid suriburh, sensible
preventive measures are .comparable to
wearing •a\s 5t belt=you may never need it
but neither would you chance doing•without
it." This is sensible prevention. •
I couldn't resist talking about sunburn.
I've seen so many bad ones. People don't
,realize how quickly they can burn and often
their stay is spoiled. As careful as I• have
been, I notice a bad spot on one arm I am
watching it.
Last. weekend I enjoyed a beautiful arts
and crafts show held at the•big bank that has
a wide verhanda around it.• I have attended
but not shown for nine years.
Some day 1 hope to, but so far I have taken
applications, helped set 'tip :and baby sat•
exhibits -and it has been a' real eye opener.
There is a big building across from -'the bank
that'has just eating places in the.dow'nstairs
area. Upstairs there are artists and a great
variety of arts and crafts. They rent space
by the month'or year. •
The bank had. a week for the• very' top,
artists -sculpture, .paintings=all• the arts
very impressive-and'all adjudicated all in-
doors. This year there was two. instead •of •
three days for those outdoors. Friday was a
beautiful day;, Saturday started out fine but' _
near noon'the icy wind started', then rain, by
3 p.me the .place was vacated: What a
shame. Couldn't'control the weather.
There were craft8'. and paintings •and,
sculpture and photog one artist had
ed figures -characters made of wood. Some,
:very humorous but all truly life -like.
• One young man made sculptures of birds
and animals that were so life -like you felt
they woudl move if you -reached towards •
them. He 'is also working on copies of
treasures brought up from the ocean in The
Keys. Sunken treasdes going ,to • the
museums and oh tours. he is working hard
and loves it. Every 'exhibitor • was in-
teresting. I enjoyed it. Love to all.
