The Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-03-25, Page 10
PAGE 10 --GODFRICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 1987 Community es t r levels high Although three of the Great LaKes usually begin a seasonal rrs in February, levels un all the lakes have gone down since the end of January, says Environment Canada in its monthly mews release on water levels. -Normally, Lakes St. Clair, Erie and On- tario rise slightly in February while Lake Huron remains stable and Lake Superior shows a slight decline," explained Ralph Moulton, Manager of the Great Lakes Water Level ('onununications Centre. "However, water supplies were. well below normal in February, and this resulted rn declines on all the lakes." In the case of Lake Ontario, action by the International Joint ('orrunission to max- imize outflows also contributed to its lower level, said Moulton. Low :supplies caused Lake Erie to be seven centimetres below the level it set in early March of last year. Lakes St. Clair and Huron were Tour and one centimetres respectively 'below their levels of early March, 1986. Although Lake Ontario remains below record levels due to lbw supplies. arid high outflows, it still reached a level five cen- timetres above that recorded in•, early March oblast year, and it will remain higher than normal for .the six-month forecast period. Lake Huron is expected to remain just below previous recor,l highs. while Lakes St, Clair and Erie are likely to exceed previous records highs for May and be below previous highs fur the remaining months. During this period, the latter three lakes will all likely be within 10 centimetres of the levels recorded in 1986. Under extremely wet conditions over the next six months, Lake Huron would set new record high levels in June, July and August. Lake St. Clair would .set new highs in May, June and July, and Lake Erie would set records in thosethree months and August as well. Lakes Superior and Ontario would re- main below previous record highs during; the six-month forecast period. Under extremely dry conditions, Lake Superior would move closer to long-term mean levels recorded during the summer and be - qmificantly below its levels of the same period last year. Lakes .Huron, St. ('lair arid Erie would remain lower than they were in 1986 but would still be significantly" above long -terra mean levels. 1,ake Ontario's monthly mean levels would begirt to drop below Long-term mean levels in May. Representives from the Town of Goderich. and Maitland Valley Conservation Authority examined the errosion control .work done along the Goderich bluffs this spring. The latest project was'an ad- dition to the protective groyne, which extends out into the lake near the pollution control plant flume. The .groyne is helping to control high water levels and prevent furtherr erosion along the beach. From left: David Gower, of Goderich; Les Tert'it, MVCA; Jim Nebel, MVCA; Milor Sturm, F. J.
