Since 1.984, 62 grain dryers across the province have made the transition to high - tech, -under a three-year program offered by the Ontario Ministries of Energy and Agriculture. and Food. . The program has been very successful, and automated control systems have real- ly proven . themselves- in commercial operation," said Energy Minister Vincent G. Kerrio. "Several companies that received the maximum assistance available under the°program have gone on to install additional systems completely on their own," he added. The minister estimates that 20 percent of Ontario's commercial operators have now switched to the fully automatic computer systems, which not only reduce fuel use by more than 10 percent, but also improve the grain's quality, by reducing shrinkage. He pointed out that energy costs are the largest component of operating costs for commercial grain dryers, and that the im- proved grain' quality possible with automated controls helps maintain a strong market for Ontario farmers, who export almost $150 million worth of pro- ducts each year. ' Ontario's Minsiter of Agriculture and Food, Jack Riddell, said the automated controls system - developed in Ontario and now being, marketed around the world - is transforming the province's commer- cial grain drying operations into a world- class industry, and he pointed out that the deadline for new project applications under the provincial assistance program is March 31, 1987. -I want to urge any companies that have not yet.taken advantage of the program tc look very closely at the benefits of retrofit- ting their grain dryers, and to get an ap. plication while there are still funds available," he said. - Jim Cunningham, Executive Vice - President of the Grain and Feed Dealers Association, is enthusiastic about putting computers to work in grain drying: "The savings achieved have helped dealers hold the line on price increases to producers during a period when the.agricultural com- munity as a whole is facing a difficult tune," he said. The cost of an automatic computer system range' from $30,000 to $100,000. depending on the size of the operation nd - the complexity of the controls needed. but companies have found that the equipment usually pays for itself in about two years. And in a year like 1986, with an extremely wet fall, a system can pay for itself in a single growing season, The grain dryer retrofit program offers one-third of the total cost of retrofitting a commercial grain dryer. Any commercial . grain dryer operator licensed by the Ministry of Agriculture. and Food. under the Grain Financial Protection Program, can apply for assistance under the pro- gram.
