Maybe you Just think you hn w
what your dad tries to teach you
Dear Colleen:
• How can I. stop my Grandfather from
spoiling me? How can I tell my Dad that
he's teaching me something that 1 already
'know?
Yours truly,
Jeff
Dear Jeff:
You're lucky to have a grandfather to
spoil you! Take it as it .is - and be grateful.
When your Dad is teaching you somethii g -
maybe you, just think you know it. You.
should .be happy about' it, because some
fathers don't have enough time tospend
with their'kids. If he keeps on with it and you
'don't appreciate it - go with the truth - tell
him you don't like it, but I'm not saying that
he won't stop.
Dear Colleen:
There's a boy in my class, let's call him
B'. He always hits people even 'when they
don't offend him; and when he gets hurt he
thinks only of himself. He's so mean outside,
but 'when he gets in the classroom. he's so
nice to impress the teacher. Wl' at'can I. do to

62,000 summer jobs
created by Skills for '87
TORONTO - Skills Development Minister
Gregory Sorbara announced recently
$45.1 -million will be' spent to create 62,000
, jobs for young people this summer. Funding;
has been increased from $43.8 -million last
year to create 1,000 more jobs .and to cover
the increase in the minimum wage. The an-
nouncement was made by the Minister in a
speech to the Board of Directors of the On-.
tario Chamber of Commerce. .
In his speech, Mr. Sorbara said that the
outlook for the summer job market
generally healthy, however, sumr- :r jobs
are scarcer, in Northern Ontario than in
other parts of the province.
The Minister stated, "This government is
continuing its commitment to young people
because we know that summer employment
adds immeasurably to the on-the-job train-
ing and work experience of our youth. It
broadens their horizons, providing them
with that very important and hard to get
first job experience," he added.
In announcing that special attention
would be paid to Northern Ontario the
Minister said that 23 per cent of the Ex-
perience jobs would be located in the north.
He also said northern business that applied
for funding through OSEP would be given
.special consideration.
The programs are:,
Start -Up which .,.provides interest-free
loans to students for summer businesses.
The Minister said' he expects about 1,250
businesses to be started, creating 1,500 jobs.
The Ontario Summer Employment Pro-
gram pays employers $1.25 an hour toward
the salaries of young people hired for new
summer jobs. About 53,000 jobs will be
created this summer through OSEP.
Experience '87 will provide 7,500' career -
related jobs in 26 Ontario government
ministries and associated organizations. .
The Minister also announced ,a 50 per cent
increase in the amount of loans to students
to start up summer businesses. The upper
limit of the loans will go to $3,000 from $2,000
enabling students "to broaden the range of
businesses they establish."

tion can call the Ontario Youth Hotline.

Knergy managment saving
Ontario Schools $28 million
TORONTO — Fiscal foresight, careful
planning, timely action, and a' relatively
small investment, are saving an estimated
$28 -million a year for Ontario's elementary
and secondary schools, Ontario Energy
Minister 'Vincent G. Kerrio announced
recently.
"Ili 1976, after the first energy price
shocks, my ministry got together with the
Ministry of Education to deal with rapidly
rising energy costs. Together they worked
out an energy management program for On-
tario's schools, which has produced total
savings to date of more than $200 -million,"
Mr. Kerrio said.
The minister stressed that energy
management is generally straight forward,
and . involves , things like installing more
energy-efficient doors and windovys and
automatic setback thermostats, adding in-
sulation and switching from oil heating to'
other less expensive fuels.
Under the schools energy management
program, school boards provide an average
of one-quarter of the cost of energy conser-
vation measures, with the remaining 75 per-
cent shared equally by the Ministries of
Energy and Education.
A' "The Boal of the pt'naram ie to nntirade
provincial educational facilities by making
them more energy-efficient. Over the 'past
10 years, major economies have been
achieved under the program with a relative-
ly small investment," said Education
Minister Sean Conway.
Mr. Conway pointed out that the schools
program has cost about $18 -million to date,
and that the money has been invested in
some 4,600 elementary and secondary
schools. He noted that the investment is sav-
ing an estimated $28 -million in avoided costs
.in 1985-86 alone, and that saving money on
energy helps make more funds available for
schools to implement educational programs
and services.
` Mr. Kerrio added that better energy
management in the public sector achieves
several government goals,
"Wiser energy use helps reduce operating
costs for public facilities, and also reduces
Ontario's reliance on oil, Which has a
volatile price and uncertain security.
Achieving major economies in the public
sector also shows important leadership.
Hopefully, private sector companies will be
encouraged to adopt similar measures when
they see the tremendous; savings that are
there," he said.
