Council received a letter from CP at their Jan. 26 meeting, informing them the com- pany wants to abandon the 77 -mile stretch of track, which runs between the northwestern outskirts of Guelph and Goderich because it is "uneconomic". The track is part of the CP Rail Goderich Subdivision which runs from Hamilton to Guelph to Goderich. The com- pany plans to retain the Guelph to Hamilton portion of the line. Along the line between • Guelph and Goderich, CP Rail received and forwarded an average of fewer than 10 carloads of traf- fic.a month in each of the last two years at all of the intermediate points combined. "In recent years, potential railway traffic at Goderich itself — which is also served by CN, Rail — has faced intense competiton from Great Lakes' vessels, and this has had an adverse impact on CP Rail's earnings," said the letter' signed by W. J. Munford, CP''s assistant vice-president of plant ra- tionalization. "It is not expected that there will be any change in either of these situa- tions," he adds. The company will be reviewing alternate transportaion services with shipppers in the area. • Council referred the letter to the Works and Property Committee, with copies to' be sent to local industries: .
