(photo by Dave Sykes) ikings win league games The GDCI Senior Viking basketball team kept its enviable league record in tact this past week, winning two more league games. Last Tuesday the Vikings easily handled the Listowel T,ords in Huron -Perth action: The' Vikes ran all aspects of their game well, as they combined for 86 points in a great team effort. The Lords were only able to answer with 53 points. ' The Vikings' top' scorer -was:Darryl Black Who hooped 38 points, Todd Graham copped 16 points while guards, Bob Bar- wick and Juergen Schulz added 14 and 10 points respectively. Rounding out the starters' scoring. was Bair.'d Robinson with seven. Playing well off the bench were Byron Bowman and Mike Bush with two points apiece. In the Vikings' • seventh league game here Thursday, they overcame a "slow start to defeat tie Clinton Redmen 78-47. Again Black was •dorriinant in the game with a 25 -point effort while Graham nearly mat- ched his output with 22 'points. Barwick chipped in with 13 points and Robinson added eight. Ray Bedard and Schulz added three apiece and Bowman and Dan Martin had two each. Don'Hearn led the Redmen with 14 points. In exhibition play Friday, the Vikings, rose to meet the challenge of the Strathroy Saints winning the game' 75-51. Graham led' the offence With a 32 -point effort while team-mate Barwick added 16 points. Playing well were Schulz with 14, Black, with 10 and ,Bowman with three points. The Vikings return to action 'today against the Seaforth Golden Bears at 2 Webb, Wark. lead Junior Vikings by TD The GDCI Vikings won a pair of•Huron 1'erth junior boys' basketball games last week, defeating the Listowel Lords, 72-54, 'I'uesday in Listowel and swamping the Central Huron Redmen, 53-22, here Thursday. Ken Webb led the Vikings. in Listowel°, scoring 18 points. Sean Wilson had 10 and Jim Laithwaite hooped 12. Steve Mayberry topped the lords with'14 points. Craig Wark was a tower of strength against the Redmen Thursday, getting 22 points. Sean Wilson was the only other Vik- ing in double figures with 12 -points. The Vikings were less fortunate in an ex- hibition game Friday in Strathroy, losing 61-34 to the Strathroy Saints. Calvin Knight had 10 points for the Vikings. The Vikes return to league action here today (Wednesday) when they host the Seaforth Golden Bears. Midgets win, lose in league play The GDCI midget boys won and lost in Huron Perth Conference basketball action last week. Tuesday, in Listowel, they, drop- ped a 62-57 verdict to the Listowel Lords. Here Friday they won a close one over the Clinton Redmen, ,44-40. In Listowel, Brad Fisher topped the Vik- ing offence with 18 points, while Shawn Talbot and Adam Ripley chipped in with 12 points a piece. Brian Corriveau and Brad Fisher led the Viking Victory over Clinton; scoring 10 points each. • Shawn Talbot had nine and Brian Lane and Pat Donnelly threw in six points apiece. The Vikings defeated Strathroy in an ex- hibition game Friday night in Strathroy, 50-38. Adam Ripley with 10 points was the only Viking in double figures. Brian Cor- riveau hit for nine points and Shawn Talbot and Meng Troeung had six points each. Bantams lose playoff opener 5-3 • in their first,,,�ggame of the round robin series the Goderich Elevator Bantams lost their opener to Wallaceburg 5-3. It wa's anybody's game until the last minute of play when Wallaceburg scored into the empty net. Goderich opened the score early in the first period on a goal by Shawn Talbot assisted by Greg Alcock and Brian Lane. The teams played fast up and down hockey until mid- way in the period Wallaceburg tied it but a let down late in the period by the Goderich team allowed two more goals making it 3-1 entering period two. In period two the teams were evenly matched with°Goderich scoring the only goal by Chris O'Neil assisted by Brian Lane. Outstanding goaltending by Shawn Currie helped the Goderich team stay close. Just a minute into the third period, Greg Alcock let go a hard slap shot to pull Goderich even 3-3. Aggressive playing by both teams made for entertaining hockey but the local team was unable 'to take the lead. Wallaceburg scored their fourth goal at the three minute mark. Goderich pressured their opponents through -out the period but ran out of steam when Wallaceburg scored into theempty net. Final score 5-3.
