The Goderich Sailors carne out flat in the
first period in their OHA junior '.C' hockey
game here Friday with the Wingham
Ironlnen and by the end of the period were
'down by a score of 5-2.
For all intents and purposes the game.'
was over for the Sailors by that time. The
Ironmen went on to outscore them 3-1 in
the second period and each team scored
once in the third.'
The game was a disappointing one for
the Sailors who had played well against the
Hanover Barons a week ago and had tied
Wingham 4-4 a week earlier. The Ironmen
certainly out hustled the Sailors Friday.

Lions drop two
in playoff series
Bill Wilkinson wins 100th game and
broncos win tournament title in Detroit
Western Michigan University coach Bill
Wilkinson had good reason to celebrate his
100th victory as coach of the WMU
'Broncos.
Not only was the Broncos' 8-2 romp over
University of Michigan the 100th win for
coach Wilkinson, but it also locked up the
' championship of the Great Lakes Invita-
tional Hockey Tournament. at Joe Louis
Arena in Detroit recently.
Playing in the tournament for the first
time since 1977 when it finished fourth, the
Broncos won the GLI Tournament with
eight freshmen in the lineup. In winnin the
championship, Wilkinson defeated former
NHLer and UM coach, Red Berenson.
The Broncos were recently not favored
to win the tournament and pulled the upset
of the tourney in the first round with a 7-3
victory over defending champion
Michigan State.
The victory boosted Western into the
final against UM. Before the loss to the
Broncos, the Michigan State Wolverines
had won the tournament,or four con-
secutive years. The last ime the two
teams met at Joe Louis Arena last March,
the Broncos pulled another upset winning
the Central Collegiate. Hockey Association
playoff championsl'ip.
However,, in two meetings earlier this
season, Michigan State swept the Broncos
6-3 and 7-3, suggesting the match at the
tournament would also go in favor of State.
One of the main reasons for Wilkinson's
and Western's win was the play of
goaltender Bill Horn who was selected the
tournament's top goaltender and also its
most valuable player, Wayne ' Gagne,
,Henry• fung and Jeff Green were voted to
the all -tournament team.
Winning is something Wilkinson, .a
former Goderich resident, has been doing
with regularity at Western ill Kalamazoo,
Mich. Last season Wilkinson was selected
as coach of the year in the Central Col-
legiate Hockey Association after he guided
the Broncos to an enviable 32-12 season
record and then won . the CCHA playoff
championship.
The broncos were also just, one of eight
national teams to reach the NCAA hockey
championships, In the NCAA tournament,
WMU lost its two -game total -goal series to
Harvard in Boston by scores of 4-2 and 7-2.
Last year Wilkinson's team led the nation
in goals, shorthanded goals and power
play percentage. They'
play They' were ranked
seventh in the nation.

A graduate of St. Lawrence University
with a bachelor's degree in physical
education, he played centre and defence
and led the team in scoring in 1968 and was
