meeting
cheerful, splendid manner one was made to
feel interested and cheerful in spite of han-
dicaps that would boggle the mind of most
people.
Mr. Sootheran was blind at three years of
age and attended Brantford School for the
Blind where he was taught many ways to
cope with his blindness. He made mention of
two good teachers there known to many as
Isabel Draper McLeod and Jean Babb.
Ways of helping the blind have greatly im-
proved over the years. Mr. Sootheran had
with him a number of articles to show how
this was done. The first was no doubt
Braille. Then there are the talking books
from Toronto — a great variety obtainable,
amateur radio, folding white cane, checker
board, some square, some round, Braille
magazine, playing cards, huge magnifying
glass, tape recorder, labels to identify cans
of food. Some of these are sent free (books
especially) by the CNIB. Remember this
when a blind appeal is made.
The Sootherans were thanked by Edna
Stewart and indeed by all who heard this
talk. A great deal was learned in one short
afternoon. For this members are indebted to
Mr. and Mrs. Sootheran for giving a
knowledge they never before possessed and
showing a capacity for a cheerful overcom-
ing of severe difficulties.
