A LETTER FROM DORIS
Bayfieid Bagle
Joyous season is here
By Doris Hunter
'BAYFIELD - Advent has arrived, the
joyous season of the year. Maude Weston is
home.
The United Church is happy to welcome,
Arthur Cribben, Art and Zoe Dadd, and
Mavis Freeman, Doug and Wilma Telford
and Rose Marie Wiese as new members of
their congregation.
The Anglicans rejoice as they welcomed a
much loved native son, their Bishop, Bob
Townshend, for a day long visit to the joint
parish of St. James, Middleton and Trinity.
Jennifer Scott and Karen Lyons became
members of the Anglican Communion at a
very beautiful service at St. James.
There was a full procession led by young
John Vandehaar carrying the Processional
Cross, followed by Phillip Du Boulay with
the crosier, as he was acting as Bishop's
Chaplain for the day. The candidates next
with their sponsors, Clara Scott for her
granddaughter Jennifer, and Joan Cluff for
a good friend Karen Lyons. There was a
joint choir, a guest musician with her
recorder, Miss Storey, and the Rector, the
Rev. Aubrey Bell followed by His Grace,
Bishop Bob in full regalia, Cope sand Mitre
as befits such an occasion.
St. James is really a miniature cathedral,
too small to have a cruciform, but with
Gothic windows, thankfully preserving the
old glass, only one pane over the entrance
door being replaced. It has "flying but-
tresses" and is true Gothic form, you start
ascending as you enter, a correct approach
to worships was the thinking of that time.
The arrival of Advent was not forgotten in
the beauty of a confirmation service, as the
Advent Candle Wreath was lighted by
Angela Vandehaar and a lovely crib with ac-
companing Creche was dedicated, the gift of
Blanche and Ed Deeves.
There were refreshments served at the
reception for the confirmands and the
Bishop, served by the hospitable ladies of St.
James and Open House at the Rectory at 4

p.m. a warm way to culminate a memorable
day for the two churches.
The song of the saw has been loud in the
village this week, as two more of our trees
have been felled. The wood scavengers were
right at work as soon as dusk fell, but Alex
and Sally Shevchuk were able to rescue
some of it for their own use.
We hate to see a tree cut, remembering
Edgar Guest's sentimental poem "Only God
can make a Tree".
The positive thing to do about it is to join
the Bayfield Garden Club, whose first com-
mitment was to plant trees.
They have replaced trees on Clan Gregor
Square, good sized maples on Clan Gregor
Square, planted trees on the Main Street and
have an avenue of flowering crab apple
trees, planted as memorials on Howard
Street.
Memorial trees have also been planted on
the ground of the church of the English Mar-
tyrs, in memory of Monsignor Bourdau and
at Trinity Church to honor the life of Canon
Harold Paull. This spring a tree will also be
planted in as a memorial to Alec McAlister,
a charter, member of the organization.
Mrs. Owen has inscribed a list of the
donors and those they wished to so
remember in a book, which may be seen at
the Archives Room.
Plant a tree, so that your descendants
may enjoy the leafy splendor.
The UCW of St. Andrew's certainly put on
a fine bazaar on Saturday. There was a
large crowd, which enjoyed the luscious
confections served with tea, lots of delicious
home baking, interesting crafts, white
elephants and have made doll's house fur-
niture; a really delightful afternoon.
Mabel Middleton has her work cut out for
her this winter. She has been invited to
mount an exhibition of her paintings next
year, by Mary Dale, owner of the Wall's
Treat Gallery on Albert Street in London. It
will be shown here first, in Trinity Parish
Hall, and later in the Gallery in London.
Congratulations Mabel!
Pity the judges when they make their
Christmas rounds for th Lioness' decora-
tion awards. Our business ection is a pic-
ture with glittering trees; - -magnificent
lighted wreaths, and really every possible
form of saying Merry Christmas to the
village folk and our visitors.
We really sparkle; It's a North American
"thing" you know, we all think, of Dicken's
Christmas Carol and have a mental picture
of little villages like ours in Britain. It is
quite different, the poulterers still hang
their birds and rabbits in their shop win-
dows and of course they have wreaths, holly
and decorations, but Christmas lighting
here -Outshines them. Don't fail to see the
elegant door at Ruth George's Gift Shop.
That's class!
Bring on the Christmas Carols purists say
no, till Christmas day, but let's have them.
It's Advent!
