Council and MTC study tra
BAYFIELD - Council here, in conjunction
with the Ministry of Transportation and
Communication (MTC), is conducting a
survey to determine trafficking problems on
Highway 21. Inarticular traffic congestion
at the new particular
store is being
examined.
The issue is being addressed on the re-
quest from the Bayfield Ratepayers
Association. Concern has been raised as
vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area
has increased with the recent opening of the
new food store.
Meetings have been held between the
planning committee and the MTC, although
no solution has been determined at this
time. Options include no parking area along
Highway 21; traffic lights; and traffic en-
forcement by the OPP.
Council hopes to make a final decision on
the matter at its July 21 meeting.
In further business at council's July 6
meeting, final approval was given to erect
three stop signs along Victoria Street. The
signs will be posted at Victoria and Blair,
eastbound on Victoria and Lidderdale, and
westbound on Victoria and Lidderdale.
Council turned down a request from Doug
Sinnamon which asked that one hour park-
ing be established along Main Street in front
of his business, The Village Market.
Mr. Sinnamon said that cars are being
parked in front of his grocery store for
several hours at a time, thus preventing
customers from quick access to his
business.
Council indicated that while they sym-
pathized with Mr. Sinnamon's problem, the
village cannot legally enforce parking
restrictions in the area.
Councillor Cliff Freeman said that local
people "should know better" than to use the
parking area for extended time periods.
Councillor Pat Muratori suggested that
"tourists and visitors to the village park
there all day, not realizing that there is a
grocery store."
Councillor Jim Quick said that council
could not provide one hour parking for Mr.
Sinnamon without setting a precedent along
Main Street.

Sault Ste. Marie on the July 4 weekend for
her nephew, Cameron Jefferson's wedding.

On Sunday , two carloads of the Jefferson
family attended church in Richard's Lan-
ding on St. Joseph's Island where Ernest
Dow, son of Norman and Winnifred Dow,

farm beside the Jefferson farm east of Staf-

and Norma Jefferson's 13th wedding an-
niversary. They were presented with a pair
of sister Eva Laing's paintings and treated
to dinner.
Anyone interested in history and sight-
seeing would he well advised to take the bus
tour of the Sou. Although the Chessells have
been to the Soo a number of times, they
found it interesting and informative.

Public Meeting
Prior to the regular council sc::}'ion rin
Tuesday, August 4 a public meeting will be
held to discuss a proposal being made by
Joe Durand to establish an eight unit apart-
ment building in Bayfield.
Mr. Durand is calling for an amendment
to the zoning bylaw to permit the apartment
building in a residential zone.
Council had previously turned down the
request and now Mr. Durand is appealing
the decision.
People living within 400 feet of the area in
question have been advised of the proposal.
Public input will be called for at the
meeting, then council and the county plann-
ing department will re -assess Mr. Durand's
proposal.
Building Permits
Council gave its okay to building permits
which call for the construction of three new
homes in the village. The permits are for
Barbara McLellan, Ken Johnston and
Margaret Talbot.
Committee of adjustment approval was
given to Donald S.Cook which calls for a
minor variance to allow for the -construction
of a detached garage to replace a carport.
As well, minor variance approval was
given to Georgina Murray which will allow
for the encroachment of an extended
bedroom into the rear year setback on her
Dowe Street home.
Council Action Questioned
John Crosthwaite questioned council on
plans to build a new public works shed in the
village. A heated debate ensured in the
public cornment portion of the July 6 council
meeting.
Mr. Crosthwaite asked council to justify
the need for the works shed. He said that a
public appeal should have been held to
determine the necessity of spending tax-
payers' money on the project.
"Money in reseves could be used to help
reduce taxes," he suggested.
Councillor Cliff Freeman said that council
had justified the need for the building. He
further noted that discussion on the project
has been underway for at least two years
and public input woe id have been welcomed
during that time. He said that tenders have
been called on the project and council will
proceed with the plans "if the price is
right."
Reeve Dave Johnston said that presently
there is no indoor storage area available for
village equipment.
'•Facilities are rented for storage, or
equipment sits outside and rusts. There are
no facilities to do any repairs on equipment.
Everything must go to the garage."
Crosthwaite said he still wasn't con-
vinced that the new shed was needed. He
further said that he has not been aware of
council's plans with regards to this project
until recently.
"Unfortunately I haven't been concerned
about this in the past. I just learned about
this last week."
Council suggested that Mr. ('rosthwLite
should not come to a council meeting at the
final stages of the project to voice his objec-
tions. It was noted that he could have follow-
ed the discussion on the project as it
transpired over the past two years and his
complaints should have been registered in
the initial stages.
