School on April 28 when the school held a
skip rope for heart program. Through the ef-
forts of approximately 130 skippers, 100 of
whom had pledges, the school raised $2,600
for heart and stroke research. Even some of
the teachers got into the act, as
demonstrated by the event's organizer for
the school, Joe Laurie. (David Emslie

SPORTING FUN
These students from Holmesville Public School took some time out from their swimming
on May 1 to model the new life jackets recently purchased for the Vanastra Recreation
Centre. Eight children's jackets and four for adults at a cost of approximately $220 were
donated by the Vanastra and District Lion's Club. (David Emslie photo)

Shirt closures
By Melody van Dorp
CLINTON - On May, 19 members of the
Clinton II Fast Stitchers united for their
fifth meeting, once again at the home of
leader Sherry Postma.
The main element of this meeting pertain-
ed to closures on a shirt. They learned
where to place buttons and buttonholes and
how to sew on buttons and how to make but -
discussed
tonholes. A button sample was executed by
each member, to later mount in project
manuals.
Alternate fasteners discussed were dome
fasteners, gripper snaps and velcro. They
also delt briefly with fiber content in fabrics
and care tips for fabric according to care
labels. A sewing crossword puzzle com-
pleted the evening.
Opportunity of a lifetime offered
The opportunity of a lifetime is just
around the corner for Junior Farmer
members in Huron County.
Each year the Rural Organizations and
Services Branch of the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food organize and conduct
a Provincial Leadership Camp for local
Junior Farmer members aged 17-24 as of ,
January 1, 1987.
It is a week-long experience, September 5
to 12, to provide prospective leaders with a
training experience which will assist them
in providing more effective leadership to
local youth clubs and activities.
To obtain further information about atten-
ding the 41st Junior Farmer Leadership
Camp, contact Janice Murray, Seaforth
(527-1532).
Deadline approaches
The target date for final payment for the
Special Canadian Grains Program is June 1.

deadline of March 31 he will be receiving a
payment. The crops that were covered are:
wheat, barley, corn, oats, Mixed grain, soy-
beans, rye, canola, sunflowers, and flax.
If anyone has direct questions regarding
this payment, the number to call in Ottawa
is 1-613-957-7078.
OAITH pleased with grant
The Ontario Association of Interval
Transition Houses is pleased to
acknowledge the efforts of Ian Scott, At-
torney General and Ontario Minister for
Women's Issues and John Sweeney, On-
tario Minister of Community and Social
Services recently when they expressed the
government's commitment to "stem the
tide of family violence in Ontario".
The Ontario Association of Interval
Transition Houses (OAITH) welcomes the
announcement of the additional $7.1
million providing a total of $12.5 million to
address primarily legal enforcement and
victim assistance.
OAITH is pleased to note that $3
million has been allocated to further sup-
port the work of existing shelters for bat-
tered women.
However, the organization is concerned
that only $300,000 has been provided for
shelter expansion as this will not meet the
demand identified by shelter workers, par-
ticularly in view of the increased
awareness anticipated by the upcoming
public and professional educational
awareness campaign.
OAITH is encouraged by the en-
thusiastic acknowledgement of their ex-
pertise which leads OAITH to expect that
the increased dollar allocation will allow
for improved salary scales and staff ratios
in the proposed new funding formula.
OAITH looks forward to co-operating in
a consultative manner with the Ministers
in the design of this new funding formula.
