CHSS athletes advance to OFSAA
Last weekend 10 competitors from Cen-
tral Huron Secondary School (CHSS) par-
ticipated in the OFSAA West Region Track
and Field Meet, held at Windsor University
this year.
This meet is a qualifying meet for the OF -
SAA Championships this weekend and br-
ings together the top four performers from
WOSAA (Western Ontario), Southern On-
tario and Central Ontario. Out of this high
quality field, only the top four competitors
in each event get to go on to the All -Ontario
Track and Field Championships to be held
in Hamilton this year.
Central Huron's banner year in track and
field continued at this meet with seven com-
petitors, the most ever, qualifying for the
.OFSAA meet.
Vivienne Stephens continued her outstan-
ding performances this year by winning
Central Huron's first ever event at the West
Regionals. Vivienne placed first in the
midget'girls 200 metre sprint with a time of
26.6 seconds. Vivienne took second palce in
the 100 metre sprint with a new school
record time of 12.7 seconds.
Steve Vandendool also set a new school
record in the midget boy shot put with a
throw of 14.73 metres which placed him in
third position in a very strong field. This
throw was almost a metre longer than his
WOSAA winning throw of 13.86 tnetres last
week.
Mike Corrie finished third in the midget
boys high jump with a personal best of 1.78
metre.
Kathleen Verhoef also finished third in the
midget girls discus with a new school record
of 25.82 metres.
The junior girls 4x100 metre relay team
also qualified for OFSAA competition
fishing fourth in their event with a 51.5 se-
cond clocking. This team is composed of
Karen Uyl, Susan Govenlock, Lisa Beattie,
and Vivienne Stephens. This is the first
relay team to go this far sinceleast the
1960's. Vivienne Stephens is ao the first
Central Huron athlete ever to compete in
three events at OFSAA.
The competitors who have performed well
all year but were unable to advance at Wind- ,
sor included:
Jon Leppington, midget boys pole vault,
fifth, 2.80 metre; David Jones, midget boys
shot put, ninth, 12.68 metre; Devon Col-
quhoun, junior boys high jump, ninth - 1.75
metre.
Congratulations to all these fine com-
petitors and good luck this weekend to those
advancing !

Pee Wees win consolation
CLINTON - After losing their first game in
extra innings, the Clinton Pee Wees went on
to win the consolation prize during the se-
cond annual Doc Miller tournament.
The eight team tournament was held herr.
on May 23 and May 24.
In the first round of play, on May 23,
Dashwood moved to the championship side
of the tournament with their 15-8 win over
Lucan.
Clinton, however, was not so fortunate;
losing 8-7 in extra innings to Walkerton.
Flesherton was victorious in the first round,
beating St.. Marys 9-4, as was Leamington,
winning 15-0 against Exeter.
In the first game of the pnncnlatinn
playoffs Clinton beat Lucan 13-3 to advance
to the consolation final. Exeter's 4-2 win
over St. Marys also moved them into the
final.
In the final game Clinton was very strong,
winning the consolation championship by a
score of 29-4.
On the championship side Dashwood won
their first playoff game by an 8-4 score over
Walkerton. Leamington tromped Flesher -
ton 14-3 in their first playoff game of the
tournament.
Leamington were declared tournament
champions after winning a very one-sided
final game 31-1 over Dashwood.
Ladies teams make history
The new Bayfield ball lights are looking
good and both ladies teams had a chance to
make history when they battled it out on
May 19 under the lights on for the first time
this year.
The shadows overpowered the Babes with
strong batting to take the win. This gives the
Shadows three victories so far.
Home games for Babes are at 8 p.m. and
the shadows are at 8:30 p.m.
In the next home game the shadows
welcome the Zurich Ball Busters on May 27.
The Clinton Sluggers show up on June 9 to
battle the Babes and tie next evening the
Varna Agrico come to challenge the
shadows. All this action is in Bayfield.

Clinton athletes
CLINTON - Students at Clinton Public
School were given the opportunity to test
their athletic skills at the school's annual
track and field meet on May 19.
Although there were many winners during
the day's events, there were also those that
put in exceptional showings, and in doing so
gathered more points than their classmates.
Megan Hodgins was the top athlete for the
senior girls, gathering 30 points, and close
behind was Debbie Draper with 27. Stacey
Reid and Kerry Cox tied for third with 22.
For the boys Vince Murch came out on top
with 35 points while Jeff Borroughs had 29
for second place and Steve Poirier had 19.
In the junior division Kara Hiltz was the
top girl with 36 points, followed closely by
Angela Murray with 3.3. Anjanette Carter
came in third with 21. It was also a tight
race for the boys as Dave Nahrgang had 36
points to finish in first place and Graham
Adams had 34 for second. Lee Gibbings pull-
ed in a close third with 30.
Lori Powell put in a good showing for the
intermediate girls and came out with 43
points and first place. Kyra Aylesworth was
in second place with 37 and Crystal Garrett
was third with 19. Shawn chipchase left the
rest of the intermediate boys behind with his
strut their stuff
score of 47 as the nearest contender was
Scott Jewitt with 26. Jason Carter and Jason
Boughen tied for third with 17 points.
The champion for the midget girls was
Stacey Fleet with 29 and she was followed by
Pam Mills with 25 and Valerie Emmerton
with 22. One boy again stood out in the boys'
area as Bryan Watson had 46 points com-
