Mary Montgomery
Mary Montgomery of 103 Victoria Terrace
in Clinton and formerly of Scarborough and
Toronto, died in Clinton Public Hospital on
May 13. She was 92.
Born on April 16, 1895 in Port (;lenone,
County Antrim, Northern Ireland, she was
the daughter of Thomas McKeown and Eliza
Margaret Bell. Mrs. Mo{ltgornery came to
Canada from Northern Ir end in 1920.
On May 30, 1923 she rnarried'Henry Mon-
tgomery at Trinity Church in Thornhill.
After her marriage, Mrs. Montgomery lived
in the Toronto area until moving to Clinton
in 1985.
Mrs. Montgomery is survived by three
daughters Pauline I Mrs. William Coulter )
of Scarborough, Joan Montgomery and
Sheila McPherson, both of Clinton. She is
also survived by grandchildren Janet and
Ed, Kathy, Chris, Steven, Suzanne, Michael
and David. Also surviving are seven great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were heli at the Ball and
Falconer Funeral Home in Clinton on May
15. • Mr. George Patterson officiated. A
graveside service was held at the Pine Hills
• Cemetery in Scarborough on May 16.
Berva Arbuckle
A former Clinton and London resident,
Berva Arbuckle of North Bay, died in
Princess Margaret Hospital on May 9,
She was born on June 7, 1924 in Clinton and
was the daughter of John Mair and Flossie
('ole.
She is survived by her husband Edward
Woodruff, as well as two daughters Muriel

She was predeceased by one son Steven
Arbuckle.
Funeral and committal services were
held on May 12 at the Ball and Falconer
Funeral Horne with Rev. David Woodall of-
ficiating. Interment was held at the Clinton
Cemetery.
Edith May Lovett
Edith May Lovett, of Huronview and
formerly of Clinton and Hullett Township
died in St. Joseph's Hospital, London on
May 17. She was 90 years old.
The daughter of John J. Harvey and Mary
Ann Miller, she was born on October 26,1896
in Hullett Township.
On February 2, 1921 she was married to
the late William C. Lovett at her family's
farm in Hullett Township.
They raised four children, Maureen I Mrs.
Harvey Hayter) of RR 1 Varna, and three
sons, Ross of Clinton, Murray of Toronto
and Barry of Ottawa. She is also survived by
12 grandchildren and by several great
grandchildren.
Along with her husband, Mrs. Lovett was
predeceased by one brother Norman
Harvey.
Mrs. Lovett was a member of the
Londesboro United Church, the Londesboro
L1CW and a past member of the Summerhill
Red Cross, a group which was active during
World War 11. After the war the group
became the Surrunerhill Ladies Club and
Mrs. Lovett continued to be part of this
organization.
Following their marriage, the Lovetts
farmed in Hullett Township until December
1964 at which time they moved to Clinton.
Mrs. Lovett resided there until October of
1977 at which time she moved'to Huronview.
Funeral and committal services for Mrs.
Lovett were held at the Ball and Falconer
Funeral Home in Clinton on May 18. Rev.
David Woodall officiated. Interment took
place at the Clinton Cemetery.
Ray Westlake Madill
Ray Westlake Madill of Blyth died on May
13, at Clinton Public Hospital. He was 65
years old.
Born and raised in Creemore, he moved to
Hanover in 1940 where he was employed in
Becker's Shoes. Eight years later he moved
to Blyth where he owned and operated
Madill's Shoes, Men's and Boys' Wear until
he retired in 1984.
The late Ray Madill was an active partici-
pant in Blyth Community life. He was a
dedicated member of Blyth United Church,
having served on the Official Board for ap-
proximately 35 years. He was a Past Master
of Blyth Masonic Lodge and a Past Presi-
dent of Blyth bions Club.
Surviving are his wife, the former Alma
Kassert, whore he married on May 2 , 1944;
111 Hanover; a daughter Cheryl and her hus-
band Everett Hessels of .Blyth; a son Terry
and his wife Sally of Georgetown; a
(laughter Catherine and her husband Kevin
Smith of Goderich, and six grandchildren:
a
Sandra, David and Paul Hessels;
Kimberley and Michael Madill; and Laura
Smith.
He is also survived by one sister, Bernice
Gowan of Kitchener, one brother Harry of
Oakville and step brother, Robert Royal of
•Creemore.
The funeral service was held on Friday,
May 15, in Blyth United Church with Rev.
Ken Bauman officiating.
Nine nephews and nieces of Mr. Madill
served as pallbearers and flower bearers.
Interment was in Blyth Union Cemetery.
ELMORE STEPHENSON
Elmore Ruskin Stephenson, of Alexander
Street, Seaforth, died Wednesday, May 13,
1987 at Victoria Hospital, London. He was
73.
Born in Stanley Township on May 7, 1914,
he was a son of the late David Stephenson
and the former Eva Armstrong. He had
farmed and then became a machinist and
welder until his retirement. He had also
worked with stained glass.
Mr. Stephenson is survived by his wife,
the former Margaret Robinson, one
daughter, Mrs. Tom (Grace) Partridge of
Orangeville and one son Paul, of Varna.
Also surviving are five grandchildren and
one sister Anna McConnell of Clinton.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Clara
Johnston and Pearl Euatt.
Friends were received at the Whitney-
Ribey funeral home, Seaforth and a funeral
service was held Friday at the Egmondville
United church. Burial was in the Bayfield
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bob Johnston, Don
'ampbell, Bill Taylor, John McConnell,
liff Talbot and Ron McClinchey.
Flowerbearers -were Bill Durst, Norman
McLean, Mervin Nott and Bert Bachert.
Ethel May Wheeler
Ethel May Wheeler, of Belgrave, died in
Wingham and District Hospital on May 10.
She was 98 years old.
Mrs. Wheeler was born in Kincardine to
Ann Jane (Wilkinson) and Thomas Wilson.
In 1916 she married Douglas H. Willock in
Watkins Glen, New York. He predeceased
her in 1959.
In 1960 she married Jesse Wheeler in
Rockwood. He predeceased her in 1968.
Mrs. Wheeler was a member of Knox
United Church,,Belgrave and Huron
Chapter 89 of the rder of the Eastern Star.
She was also a teacher and a medical
secretary.
She is survived by several nieces and
nephews and cousins as well as a special
friend, Lillian Thompson of East
Brunswick, NJ.
She was predeceased by one brother,
William Wilson and two sisters, Mrs.
Beatrice Travis and Mrs. Pearl Sager.
A funeral service was held on May 12 at
McBurney Funeral Home with Rev. John G.
Roberts officiating. Pall bearers were

Ewan C. Ross
Ewan Clark Ross, age 65, died May 3 in
Alexandra Marine and General Hospital,
Goderich. He had been in poor health for the
last several years.'
A native of Glengarry County, he came to
Huron County in 1939. He enlisted at London
with the Canadian Army in 1940 and was on
active service with the 5th Armoured Divi-
sion for the duration. He suffered severe
shoulder injuries in a tank accident while in
England. In 1946 upon returning to Canada,
he worked as a licensed mechanic in
Goderich. He was with the quality control
department of Champion Road Machinery
before he was forced due to his war injuries,
to take early retirement at age 59.
Mr. Ross worked in his spare time as an
historian for Eastern Ontario and was
author and co-author of several books. A
History of Glengary is now a reference book
in libraries and universities. On August 3,
1946 he and Esther MacMath were married
at Holmesville. He is survived by his wife
and a son W. John and his wife. Bette_ Moose
Factory, Ontario; a step -granddaughter,
Lisa Timmerman, Peterborough; a sister
Edith (Mrs. Lyall Symonds) Campbellford.
His brother, Gordon, predeceased him in
1984.
He was a member of Knox Presbyterian
Church, Goderich, and of the Royal Cana-
dian Legion. On May 4 a service was held by
Branch 109 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the
Legion, at the McCallum and Palla Funeral
Home, Goderich. On May 5 a service was
conducted by Rev. G.L. Royal and a solo
was contributed by Bette Ross accompanied
by Lorne Dotterer.
On May 6, friends and relatives gathered
to pay their respects at the McArthur Bros.
and MacNeil Funeral Home, Cornwall. On
May 7 a service was conducted at St. An-
drews United Church, Martintown, by Rev.
Clifford Evans. A solo was contributed by
Mr. Ross's niece, Heather Griffith, Ottawa,
and Arnold Murray, a piper with the
Glengarry Highlanders, played Scottish airs
before and after the service. At the
graveside the piper played My Glengarry
Home, the lyrics and music of which were
composed by Glengarrian Kennie McRae.
Burial took place in the North Branch
Cemetery near Martintown. In addition to
floral tributes, donations were received for
the Canadian Cancer Society and., other
charities.
Pallbearers were Ron Westlake,
bay field; nephews Wayne Symonds, Mon-
treal, and Lorne Ross, Ottawa; George van
Beek, Tom Curran and Andrew Harkness,
Glengarry County.
Daniel Marran Vere
Dan Vere, son of Marj and Mickey Vere of
Clinton, was ordained a Roman Catholic
priest on May 2 by Bishop John M. Sherlock
in St. Peter's Cathedral, London. Dan
started his education at St. Aloysius
Separate School, then went to St. Michael's
Separate School, Stratford and then on to
Stratford Central Secondary School. He ob-
tained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in
philosophy from the University of Western
Ontario and then studied at St. Peter's
Seminary in London, graduating with a
Master of Divinity degree. His pastoral in-
ternship was spent at Sacred Heart Parish
and St. Gabriel's Parish, both in Windsor. In
November, 1986 he was ordained a deacon.
Dan celebrated his first mass at St.
Joseph's Church, Clinton, on May 3 and will
become the associate pastor at Most
Precious Blood parish in Windsor. Dan has
six brothers, Terry, Stephen, David, Den-
nis, Paul and Randy.
Richard Anthony Grillmayer
Richard Anthony Grillmayer, son of Phil
and Ilse Gemeinhardt of Bayfield, has
graduated from Sir Sandford Fleming Col-
lege, School of Natural Resources, as a Fish
and Wildlife Technician. Rick is currently
employed with the Ministry of Natural
Resources in Richmond Hill.
Dinner meeting well attended
WINGHAM - Over 160 people attended this
dinner meeting, held at St. Andrew's
Presbyterian Church. The dinner was serv-
ed by the ladies of St. Andrew's Church and
entertainment was provided by Sacred
Heart School Choir.
Don Pennell of Burlington spoke ably and
convincingly about the new Family Coali-
tion Party. His speech was received en-
thusiastically by those present. Mr. Pennell
explained the reasons why Ontario needs a
new political party. At the federal level, the
Christian Heritage Party represents the
pro-life, pro -family point of view, but in On-
tario, none of the parties represents this
view.
The Ontarian Family Coalition Party em-
phasizes three main points: 1. The "deity",
