First police boat sold
By Anne Narejko
There's nothing around you for miles
when you're out on the lake. It's just you and
your boat.
Sounds peaceful doesn't it? But as most
people know, it can be dangerous if you
aren't paying attention and, most impor-
tantly, if your boat is not in good working
order or suited for the body of water you are
in.
Blue Seas Boat Company, of Vanastra,
has tackled this problem in two ways. First
they make a boat that will handle very
rough waters and, secondly, they have sold
their first police boat which will assist in
resucing those who are lost in the waters in
the York Region.
The Blue Seas 31 was designed by Royal
Lowell of Maine, and according to owner
I)on Bere, it is a "typical sports fishing
boat" with a few alterations.
For the York Regional police boat, many
extra qualities were added, such as a police
radio, VHF and RDF. Also included is a CB,
depth finder, knot meters and radar.
It has a Volvo diesel 200 horse power turbo
charged engine, allowing it to cover approx-
imately 20 miles per hour.
A snooze area is located at the front of the
boat for those out on long searches. The
space could also be used as a resuce area as
well.
The Blue Seas Boat Company first obtain-
ed the designs for Blue Seas 31 in 1984. From
there they built the tooling (moulds).
Mr. Bere wanted to be sure he was pro-
ducing a quality product, so once they had a
completed boat, it was test driven 7,000
miles to the Bahamas. Now one boat per
month is turned out at the company, with
the police boat being number 12.
"Other boats have gone to Toronto,
Ohio...Over half of the boats that are sold go
to the States," said Mr. Bere.
These boats. which are made of fibre
glass, have more glass components than
most power boats do, says Mr. Bere.
"They're built strongly to commercial
standards," he added.
A diesel engine was installed instead of
gas because of its reliability, said Mr. Bere.
"With all the salmon fishing that goes on
today. you need good boats - especially for
fishing in April and May," he said.
The York Regional Police almost bought a
boat from a company in British Columbia,
but changed their minds when they talked to
Huron County's Blue Seas Boat Company.
• The ()PP and the coast guard have lots of
boats, but they have difficulties finding good
ones." explained Mr. Bere.
He claims that it is the "spirit of craft-
smenship" that enables companies to build
fine products and Mr. Bere believes there is
a lot of this spirit in Huron County.
There's a good boat building capability
in Huron County. I'm fascinated with it
myself...You often find the finest boats built
in furniture manufacturing areas and Huron
County has lots - It's the spirit of craftsmen -
ship," he said.
