Sports
Want to help?
I've lived in Clinton for just over a year
now, and I've learned one major point
about being a sports reporter - without the
help of those involved in local sports, there
could be no sports section in this paper.
Which brings me to the point of this
column.
Although I have had co-operation on
many fronts in my work on the sports beat
- still more assistance from you is needed.
Over the past 12 months I have had
many steady contributors to these sports
pages, such as track and field 'news from
the high school, bowling results and some
hockey scores.
However, there definitely could be more
contributions being made for the sports
section.
Currently some new sports seasons are
starting in the area, and I couldn't think of
a better time to make this plea.
Currently I receive regular scores from
the ball hockey league, and statistics for
high scorers and leading teams should be
available after the first month of play.
I know for a fact, though, that this isn't
the only sport now running in Clinton and
the surrounding areas. Therefore, I would
like to ask for assistance from team
members or coaches to spice up these
pages.
I'm not asking for too much. I'm sure
that many team members, and even
coaches, would be happy to see some of
their results in the paper.
With a little help, we can accomplish this
feat with very little strain.
I realize that every team isn't going to
have a person available to write up their
games.
The solution to this problem is simple. If
no one on your team is interested in
writing, score sheets can be dropped off at
the office and I'll take it from there. If you
would like to keep the game sheets I can
photocopy them. If you can't get to the of-
fice during business hours we have a mail
slot in the door for night drop offs. Anyone
wishing to have their sheets returned can
just mark them and I'll hold them until
they can be picked up.
Another alternative for helping to, im-
prove these sports pages is to give me a
phone call at the office. I can take dictation
of a whole story or of the facts necessary
for me to write a story. I'm fairly easy to
reach, at 482-9502, and if I'm not here I'll
do my best to get back to you.
It's that simple.
Schedules of upcoming games would
also be much appreciated. We can't, of
course, get out to every game because
there are just too many sports running at
once in this area, but when possible we'd
like to give each team some photo
coverage over the season. I need at least
two sports pictures per week for thia see -
tion, and the greater the variety, the better
the section.
So, once again, any assistance I receive
will be much appreciated. In case you
missed`it before, call me at 482-9502 during
business hours with your sports news, and
I'll do my best to ensure it gets the proper
coverage.
-Thank you (in advance) .
Ball Hockey
Things were a bit hectic around my •desk
last week and I didn't get a chance to run
the results from the first league games of
ball hockey.
So, here goes. The Bums beat Flemings
by a score of 6-5 and the Rattz won 6-2 over
the Skidz. The Buccaneers and the Flying
Dutchmen had a close game with the Bucs
coming out on top 5-4, and the team I play
for, the Outlaws, tied the Porchclimliers
2-2.
In the second week of play the Por-
chclimbers battled to a 3-2 win over the
Flying Dutchmen. The Outlaws got cream-
ed by the Buccaneers to the tune of 10-1
(ouch). The Flemings and the Skidz met
with the Flemings coming out on top 5-1
and the Bums beat the Rattz 4-3.

The world of wrestling came to the Clinton Arena on May 6 with a number of matches in-
cluding midget wrestling and a steel cage match. All was not violence and body slams,
however, as was demonstrated by this female wrestler ( seated, centre) who took time
out to sign autographs for these appreciative fans. (David Emslie photo)

If in doubt - (h)ti't
In -many driving situations there are signs
and signals that tell you what to do. You get
the message and you act accordingly. At
other times there is no sign, no signal. no
tip-off of any kind. In fact. there are none
that can be given in some situations. ('an
you pass that car ahead or not.' ('an you
safely make a left turn before oncoming
traffic arrives at the scene? Should you try
to take that curve at your present rate of

There's nn mechanical action of any kind
