especially those who were not invited to
the ceremony.
And finally we come to the matter of
The Dress.
London brides spent an average of $500
on their gowns last year. You can save
some money with homemades, rentals
and second-hand, but beware of the
hazards.
Few retailers rent gowns because
women's styles change too quickly, and
typical wedding dress material is too
fragile to stand up to multiple cleanings
and alterations. The same principle ap-
plies to second-hand wear.
After much searching, one bride who
had her heart set on something authen-
tically old-fashioned, managed to find a
delightful Edwardian tea dress for $175 at
Divine Decadence, a theatrical used -
clothing store in Toronto. After a little
expert mending and pressing by her
mother, the dress came through in fine
fettle.
However, consider the case of another
bride who was looking forward to wear-
ing her mother's wedding gown — until it
disintegrated at the dry cleaner's two

When making your own alterations,
remember the bride who made a special
blue slip to lend a touch of color under
her gown. On the morning of the wed-
ding, she discovered that the neckline of
Not so long ago, most single women liv-
ed with their parents until marriage and
collected everything necessary for a
home. Meanwhile, bachelors tended to
live in apartments furnished with little
more than stereo, couch and bar. Today,
both men and women leave home earlier
and marry later.
Consequently, they accumulate most
home comfort "necessities" while still
single. For today's newlyweds, combin-
ing two sets of possessions into one home
can be the first great challenge of mar-
ried life.
With space at a premium in most first
homes, couples quickly become familiar
with space -saving techniques. They
devise ingenious ways to eliminate clut-
ter and are likely to spend entire Satur-
days installing closet organizers or
building shelves.
They learn to throw away junk or, at
least, items not used in the past 10 years.
And, for space -saving convenience, they
buy multi -functional appliances instead
of outfitting their kitchens with 20 in-
dividual gadgets.
Fortunately, solutions that save time
and space do exist. One Ls to install ap-
pliances in under -used areas. Recently
developed under -cabinet appliances, for
example, unclutter countertops without
trading off accessibility and convenience.
A recently introduced newcomer to the
battle to save space is the undersink
dishwasher. General Electric's
Spacemaker dishwasher installs in the
frequently wasted area under the sink,
saving up to 24 inches of valuable wall
space. It fits under a special six inch
deep single -bowl sink or can be offset
under a double -bowl sink to allow use
with a disposer.
A little ingenuity goes a long way
towards making a small place seem
larger. And the more room a newly mar- -
ried couple has, the more they can con-

the undergarment wouldn't fit over her
special hairdo, and, in the end, she walk-
ed up the aisle wearing a slip that was
slit to the navel.
If you are planning a small wedding of
your own, cross your fingers, keep it sim-
r
pie, and when tempted to plump for the
easier, more expensive alternatives,
remember the wisdom of the following
corollary of Murphy's Law: "The length
of the marriage is inversely proportional
to the cost of the wedding."
