diamond that has no inclusions is very
rare and therefore more valuable.
Carat Weight
The weight of a diamond is measured
in carats. One carat is divided into 100
points so a diamond of 75 points weighs
.75 carats. Of all the diamonds mined
every year, only one in a million weighs
a carat or more — an exceptional gift
which becomes more precious with time.
On an average, 50 tons of kimberlite
has to be mined and processed to produce
a one -carat polished diamond - a ratio of
250 million to one. Only 20 per cent of all
diamonds mined are of sufficiently good
quality to be made into jewellery. The
rest are used industrially.
Shopping
When shopping for a diamond, there
are many things to look for. Ask yourself
these questions:
1. Did the jeweller answer all my
questions?
2. Did he try to avoid any questions?
3. Do they provide any additional
services?
4. Did he seem helpful?
a
5. Did he explain the 4 C's?
If they are able to answer any ques-
tions you may have will show that the
staff is knowledgable Since it is a once
in a lifetime purchase, they should pass
their knowledge on to you. It is very im-
portant to buy your diamond from a
reputable jeweller and someone you feel
comfortable with.
Beware of "sales." Look at the final
price and not what you are "saving."
Sometimes it's easy to be confused on the
quality of diamonds if you don't shop
from a reputable jeweller. So don't be
afraid to ask questions. When comparing
prices from one store to another ask
yourself, "Is the quality the same in
these diamonds?"
Cost
What should I spend? Remember that
this is a .once in a lifetime purchase and
it is a diamond that she will be wearing
for the rest of her life. Diamonds are
always an investment and you want her
to be proud to "show it off" for at least 50
more years. Most experts suggest that
and to two months salary is the average
price.
