Because of .its unique brilliance, fire
and superior hardness, diamonds have
come to symbolize eternal love. It is one
of the most beautiful symbols we en-
counter in our lifetime.
The diamond is the simplest of all gem
minerals — pure carbon. It is the hardest
substance known to man, so only another
diamond can scratch it. However, dia-
mond can chip or cleave if given too hard
a knock, so it shouldn't be worn during
strenuous work or play.
History
Diamonds have long been associated
with love because like love they are uni-
que and precious.
In early history, diamonds were believ-
ed to possess magical powers. People of
Ancient India believed hat diamonds
made them invincible. Diamonds were
worn. in battle as a symbol of courage.
One story tells of Cupid's arrows being
tipped with diamonds. Even today, they
still retain this magic, for in her heart,

every woman believes that a diamond is
the symbol of pure and lasting love.
The tradition of the first diamond
engagement ring dates to the 15th cen-
tury when Mary of Burgundy received a
diamond ring on her betrothal to Ar-
chduke Maximilian of Austria on August
17, 1477. The Egyptians believed that
"the vein of love" joined the third finger
of the left hand to the heart; thus the
tradition of placing the ring on this
finger.
The 4 C's
Diamonds are judged according to the
4 C's: Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat
Weight. Two diamonds that look alike at
first, may in fact be very different and
two diamonds of equal size can have very
unequal values.
Cut
Proper cutting and polishing are most
responsible for the diamond's beauty. It
can take anywhere from several hours to
several months to cut one isngle dia-
mond. It is the cut that enables a dia-
mond to make thebest use of light. When
a diamond is cut to good proportions,
light is reflected from one facet to
another and then dispersed through the
top of the stone. The diamond is also bet-
ter able to handle light, creating more
scintillation and sparkle and that's a
good reflection on you.
Color
Diamonds are found in a range of col-
ors from faint yellow or brown through to
the very rare pinks, blues and greens.
However, the best color for a diamond is
no color. It is a totally colorless diamond
that allows white light to pass effortlessly
through it and be dispersed as rainbows
of color.
Clarity
A diamond's clarity, is determined bu
viewing it under 10 -power magnification.
Most diamonds contain very tiny natural
inclusions. However, the fewer and
smaller the inclusions, the less likely it is
that they will interfere with the passage
of light through the diamond and the
more beautiful the diamond will be. A
