School on Wheels reaches milestone
CLINTON - Another milestone has been
reached in the story of Clinton's School on
Wheels, with the publication of a book called
just that, School on Wheels.
The book will be unveiled this Saturday
when co-authors Karl and Mary Schuessler
will be on hand ,to sign copies at The Card
Shoppe in Clinton.
Sub -titled Reaching and Teaching
Isolated Children of the North, the book
details the story of an epic chapter in On-
tario's educational history. An overview of
the tale of the seven travelling schools
which brought education to the scattered
children of the province's vast north-west
between the years of 1926 and 1950, the book
is mainly the story of the Sloman family,
and of Canadian National School on Wheels
No. 15089, the car which is currently
undergoing restoration at Clinton's Sloman
Park, on the banks of the Bayfield River at
the corner of Matilda St. and Victoria
Terrace.
The derelict car was purchased in 1982 by
the town of Clinton, and installed at the park
two blocks from the Simon home, and nam-
ed in honour of one of Clinton's most famous
families. Teacher Fred Sloman died in 1973,
but his wife, , Cela was presented with the
Order of Canada medal in 1984, in recogni-
tion of the work the couple did in their 39
years on the School Car.
The book's authors first met Fred and
Cela Sloman in 1978, when they produced an
hour-long documentary for CBC radio on the
unique railway schools of the north; the idea
of this book has been growing ever since.
Karl Schuessler is a free-lance writer,
broadcaster and lecturer who has published
two other books, as well as several plays
and films, and who has won two Actra
Awards and an ' Ohio State Award for his
work. He also serves as an interim pastor
for the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and
recently spent several years at St. Peter's
Lutheran Church in Zurich.
His wife, Mary, shares in radio script
writing, editing and research, as well as
writing a column for the Stratford Beacon
Herald. The couple live in a renovated
100 -year-old German Baptist Church at
Brodhagen, 18 miles northwest of Stratford.
Published by one of Canada's finest pro-
ducers of railway books, Boston Mills Press
of Erin, Ontario, the 66 -page book is crowd-
ed with photographs, mainly of the Sloman's
travelling school. In soft cover, it sells for
• $9.95.
The Schuesslers and Mrs. Sloman will be
at Sandy's Card Shoppe between the hours
of 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. September 13, to
sign copies of the book. Signed copies of the
. limited first edition are certain to quickly
become collectors items, and interested
book lovers are urged to move quickly in ob-
taining one.
