In 1862, Bill Armstrong's grandfather built the home he now owns. Through the years, many
changes have been made, but the unique features of the home remain the same. The house is
located off Concession 5. (photo submitted by Bill Armstrong)

House cost $940.64
It's hard to believe, but Bill Armstrong's
grandfather had a home built for $940.64.
Mind you that was back in 1862, but the
home is still standing and looks better than
ever
Prior to having the present home built,
Mr. Armstrongs' grandparent lived in a log
cabin on the grounds.
A unique element of the home is the win-
dows and doors which were made by hand.
The fireplaces are also original and the
beams are made of pine.
The bricks were bought from Zurich.
The farm has remained on the original 100
acres with wheat being the first crop
planted. Approximately three acres of corn
and oats were also planted.
In 1910, the home was turned over to Mr.
Armstrong's father, Archibald.
In 1937, hydro was put in the house and in
1952 plumbing was added.
Although the size of the home has not
changed, there have been other changes
made.
The roof is no longer flat and the kitchen,
which was originally in the rear, is now in
the main portion of the house. The pipes
which could accommodate a small stove
still remain in every room, but are no longer
needed as Archibald installed a wood and
coal furnace in 1930.
That stove was replaced around the 1960s
with an oil and wood furnace. In 1985, that
was updated to electric heat.
