In 1982, due to a lack of fish and poor
fishing conditions in the area, the Bayfield
Anglers Association decided to replenish the
fish population through their own means.
"We decided this in the fall of 1982, and
spent all winter organzing it," Anglers'
President
Un said.
Beforebeginning>Ul, build the necessary
equipment to raise their own trout, the
Anglers first had to have permission from
the Ministry of Natural Resources, and
become a registered club with the ministry.
Next they looked for the •proper ways• to
raise trout from eggs. The method they
chose was to build an upwelling box. .
"We got the plans to build the box and a
small grant from the ministry for the
materials to build it," Mr. Uniac Said. "Any
materials since the beginning besides the
box have been provided by our members."
Following the building of the box for the
egg hatching, the members had to find a
.suitable place for the incubation. In their
first year of production, 1983, they placed
the box near a stream close to Mr. Uniac's
home. They soon found this was not a
suitable place.
"We started mit with 40,000 eggs and the
end result was only 1,200 fry (baby trout),"
Mr. Uniac said. "It was due to inexperience
and poor water conditions."
The following year they decided to dig a
pond on a spring creek on the farm of Gor-
don Hill in Stanley Township. They had the
pond and filtering system for the water built
by local contractors.
Again they had to have permission from a
ministry, this time from the Ministry of the
Environment, to take water from the
stream and put it back after using
chemicals in it.
After htiving the pond and filtering system
built they were set to give trout rearing
another try.
The method they use involves many dif-
ferent stages, the first of which is going to
the ministry fi ,h way on the Nine Mile River
in Port Albert and trap catching female
trout during the spring rainbow run.
Once they have caught the trout they strip
the eggs from them, by hand, which they
have been trained to do, and put the eggs i
a small tray.
The eggs are then fertilized by two males
1snd counted by displacement.
Next they are hardened by river water out
of the Nine Mile River, and broughtto the
upwelling box situated on Mr. Hill's farm.
Once there the eggs are placed on.screens
in the box and each day for approximately
33 days three men go to the box, first to pick
out the dead eggs and count them. •
"If this is not done, the -eggs around the
dead egg will die," Mr. Uniac explained.
To stop fungus growth the eggs are next
treated with Malachite Green, then the
temperature is recorded. "It runs anywhere
from nine to 12 degrees celsius," said Mr.
Uniac.
Another daily chore carried out is the
cleaning of the filters in the pond from
which the incubation water comes to insure
there is no silt in the water.
With this careful treatment, in approx-
imately 20 days the eggs will get eyes, and in
around 30 to 33 days the eggs will hatch and
become fry.
Immediately following the first hatching
