AFRICAN SAFARI
.Some people think 'of Africa
"tame" in this day and age, but the op-
posite is actually true, The African
"bush is still as primeval as it always
was - and always will be. The following
is a ..story which was told to me and
graphically ,illustrates this point. You
may be interested in it as Well!
BOTSWNA: May, 1985
The long -wheelbase Toyota land -
cruiser truck bumped along the track in
the mid afternoon May sunlight. Behind
the wheel, Soren Lindstrom, profes-
sional hunter for Safari South, idly
chattered to his American client.
Behin,4 them., on the open bed of the
truck, on.a raised platform, the client's
wife sat, camera at the ready, with the
two Tswana Trackers on either side of
her. °-
The bush was low, but very thick, not
ideal for game viewing at all. The late
autumn idyll was to be soon and abrupt-
ly shattered. .The Toyota came to an
abrupt halt as about 40 yards ahead a
tawny, shaggy shape ,sauntered across
the rutted tracks. "'By God, that's a
bloody fine lion", hissed Soren to his
client. Instantly at the word "lion", the
air became charged with electricity.
With camera' -at the ready, and all
nerves straining, the client's wife swept
the bush ahead through her telephoto
lens as the Toyota eased slowly
forward.
In the cab, Soren heard a soft plop
and felt the truck tilt slightly - then all
hell broke loose at the back....
Soren was conscious of ' screaming,
scuffling and banging as the woman
and two trackers dived under the view-
ing platform - the. lion was on the back
of the truck!
Immediately accelerating, shouting
at the top of his lungs and banging the
side of the cab with the flat of his hand,
Soren succeeded in "scaring" the lion
off the truck.
About 60 yards down the track, Soren
slowed down so the distraught . client
could comfort his terrified wife. As the
client opened the cab door to get out,
Soren heard him yell - "Here he comes
again." The lion was back oh the truck.
Surging forward and yelling and bang-
ing, the two men again managed to
shake the lion off...
Soren remembers thinking, "We
don't have a lion licence, -but there is
• definitely something wrong with that
Ron," "Get the rifle loaded", he
shouted to the /client, as he wrestled
with the steering wheel. •
The client frantically pushed 309
grain silver tips into his racked 375 H &
11 in the narrow confines of the ab as
the Toyota bounced at best speed over
the rutted track.
As they slowed down, incredibly for
the .third time, the lion was up on the
truck.
The shot fired by as distraught hus-
band leaning out the cab door wag
understandably lousy. The lion jumped
• off the truck and disappeared into the
bush.
About -half an hour later, with the ab-
solutely shatted woman safely perched
up in a tree some distance from the
scene, a grimfaced Lindstrom armed
with a .458 double rifle - his sornewhat
shaken -up client armed with a bolt ac-
tioned .375 and his two trackers -disem.-
- barked at the site of the last viewing of
the lion.
Soren's reasons for going after the
lion were twofold. First, the big cat was
wounded. Second, he was obviously out
for trouble and could be a iiienace to the
whole region. •
The bush was low; but very dense and
after about 40 yards of cautious track--
ing Soren's uneasiness grew into an
overwhelming feeling of imminent
catastrophe.
Looking back over his shoulder, he
could plainly • see the Toyota and its
raised , platform. "Let's go get the
truck", he said - and turned to go.
As he turned, the lion erupted out of
the ground at his tracker's feet -
straight at Soren! One shot, fired from
the hip was all there was time for - the
man and at went down in a tangle with
the big double spinning off to the side.
The first raking blow from the lion, as
he sprang, 'caught the big Dane in the
middle of the forehead and cut a slit,
down to the bone, to the back of his
skull. The lion then grabbed him by the
right upper arm, and proceeded to
shake the violently •struggling man. •
Changing his grip to the left forearm,
the lien shook him again like a rag doh.
Big, 6'2" and 225 lbs., the red-headed
Dane was.ashelpless as a child. All.this
took about 5 seconds, although it seem-
ed to be happening in slow motion. -
Relief came when the first tracker
broke out of his shock and made a bolt
for it. ' •
Instantly, dropping Lindstrom, the
lion overhauled the fleeting Tswana
within 10 yards and had him down.
Lindstrom up -on his feet, grabbed the
client's rifle hut found he could uot.use
his arms properly. The client snapped
out of his shock, but. with the tangle of
screaming. man and grunting lion, a
shot was not possible.
The second tracker arrived at that in-
stant in the cruiser:, guarithinking - and
rammed the lion, who mride'eff .into• the
buSh. •
Quickly- they grabbed the un-
conscious tracker, loaded him onto the
truck, jumped in and made off as quick-
ly •as possible.
Unbelieveably, and for a fourth tIme,
the lion was on the truck again! Yelling,
honking and bashing the side of the
truck, they succeeded in getting the lion
off - this time for good. At this stage,
Lindstrom passed out.
A hasty landing strip was made in a
clear space some distance away and a
plane was radioed in to pick up the two
unconscious men.
Lindstrom's mauling was severe..His
right upper arm was broken in two
places and the bicep muscle torn right
off the bone. The left forearm was
broken in one place and nerve damage
sustained. The tracker survived - but he
will never be Wel° track again.
Atter 6 months .hospital - and
numerous operations - Soren hopes to
hunt antelope In the 1986 season - you
• can't keep a good man down!
