STRATFORD - After more than three
weeks of special student matinees, the
Stratford festival begins preview perfor-
mances to the general public this week.
May 9 marks the first preview perfor-
mance of Rodgers and Hart's The Boys
From Syracuse, the Broadway musical that
officially opens the Festival Season on May
19.
Directed by Douglas Campbell with
musical direction by Berthold Carriere,
design by Polly Scranton Bohdanetzky,
choreography by Max Reimer and lighting
design by Michael J. Whitfield, the produc-
tion marks several firsts for the Festival. It
is the first Broadway musical to be mounted
for a full season in the Festival Theatre. It
also marks the dancing debut on the
Festival stage of such Stratford veterans as
Mervyn Blake, William Needles and Bruce
Swerdfager.

She Boys From Syracuse premiered on
roadway in 1938 and was the first Broad-
way musical to be based on a
Shakespearean play (The Comedy of Er-
rors). George Abbott also directed the pro-
duction, prompting the following rave
review from Richard Watt.
"If you have been wondering all these
years just what was wrong with The Com- -
edy of Errors, it is now possible to tell you. It
has been waiting for a score by Rodgers and
Hart and direction by George Abbott."
The Stratford Festival is also pleased to
announce that Mr. George Abbott will be a
guest of honor at the May 19 official opening
of The Boys From Syracuse. Three years
ago, at age 95, he came out of retirement to
direct the Broadway hit production of "On
Your Toes".
Preview performances at the Stratford
Festival continue through May 17 at both the
Festival and Avon Theatres and tickets are
available at substantial savings. For reser-
vations, simply call the Stratford Festival

Business is booming at the Blyth Festival964-4668.
• Blyth - business is booming at the Blyth
Festival Box Office these days! As of April
30, the number of groups purchasing tickets
was double the figures for the same period
in 1985. Sales of vouchers were up nearly 50
percent. Twice as many seats have been
sold for each performance as at this time
last year; one matinee performance of
"Drift" by Rex Deverell is already com-
pletely sold out and most other matinees are
filling up quickly.
Brenda Doner, general manager, at-
tributes the increase to three main factors:
the public enjoyed the 1985 season and want
to book early for 1986; advance information
on the season was made available to
members of the Festival, and to groups;
and, of course, the price of the tickets is still
one of the best values around. (Buying
vouchers makes the individual ticket price
even more reasonable: $7 each instead of $8
and $10.
Members of the public who have not
already purchased vouchers or who have
not exchanged vouchers for tickets are ad-
vised to do so in good time to avoid disap-
pointment. Single ticket sales start on May
19, and vouchers are only available for pur-

Talented, area young people showed up for
auditions held in London and Grand Bend in
mid-March, and because of special considera-
tion by the Actors' Equity Union, the
Playhouse will be able to offer many of these
interested "stars to be" a place in the 15th An-
niversary Season.
•
A chance to be a part of the professional
companies of CAROUSEL and ANNIE, will
not only be a treat for these up and coming
actors, but will also be a special treat for the
audience.
In addition to those who have already audi-
tioned, the Playhouse would be delighted if
*area high-school students, able to carry a
tune, and able to attend every performance
(June 24 to July 12) would join the cast of
CAROUSEL by singing onstage during the
last scene — "high-school graduation".
Those interested should contact the Huron
Country Playhouse (238-8387) as soon as
possible.
