best the goalie. Clinton went up by two a half
minute later when atom Shawn Chipchase
fired a puck through the crease which was
put into the open net by Curtis McCone.
Down by two goals Mitchell put the
pressure on and Mitchell's high scorer
Korry Dietz was able to get a break away
which was foiled by atom, defenseman Scott
Jewitt when he used his speed to get back
just in time to tip Dietz's stick. He then was
able, while sprawled on the ice to slide the
puck to Chipchase who sped up the ice with
Dykstra in a two on one. The defenseman
centered his attention on Dykstra which
allowed Chipchase to freely beat the goalie.
The first period ended with Clinton scor-
ing three goals in less than a minute to go
ahead by a score of 4-1.
Clinton's efforts were slowed in the second
period as they were forced to kill a number
of penalties. Clinton's defence was equal to
the task as Captain John "Dog" Bezaire led
his forces, including the hard -digging Craig
Caldwell, who performed admirably at
skating the puck out of his own end or dump-
ing it into the Mitchell zone. During one two
minute penalty, Mitchell failed to get a shot
pn net.
During Clinton's fourth penalty Mitchell
managed to bring the puck behind the net
and tuck the goal into the corner in one of
their patented scoring plays.
Clinton came right back with its fifth goal
as center Taylor won the face-off in the Mit-
civil zone and slide a shot into the corner
under the reaching glove of the goalie. Mit-

son sliced Clinton's lead to 2-1 with just
under five minutes remaining. During the

Wright and Shane MacDonald the Atoms

skating, hard-fought defensive game.

Mustangs frustrated in playoffs
CLINTON - Despite good pe.r£o
prlYlanCeS in
their last three' outings, the Mustangs are
destined to finish out of race for a spot in the
semi-final round of the Junior 0 playoffs.
Clinton is sporting a one win and four loss
record in the eight game round-robin
preliminary playoffs with the top two teams
advancing to the semi-finals. Currently, the
top two spots are held by Tavistock (4.0) and
Grand Valley (3-0)..
In their last three games, the Mustangs
registered a win over Brussels but dropped
back to back losses to the Tavistock Braves
5-1 and 8-4.
Manager Bryan Marriage said the
Mustangs played a solid game against
Brussels but the two games against.
Tavistock were frustrating for the4eam.
``We played a good game against Brussels
but unfortunately when we played Friday
night (against Tavistock) we d"idn't have
any luck around the net. On Saturday (also
against Tavistock) in the smaller arena
against their big boys our guys took a
physical beating, but we stayed with them
for most of the game," said Mr. Marriage.
Clinton 4 - Brussels 2
In playoff game in Brussels on February
26, the Mustangs posted a 4.2 victory over
the Bulls who have yet to win thus far in the
playoffs.
After Brussels opened the game with a
goal at the 12:55 mark of the first, the
Mustangs tied the score ,under a minute
later on a goal by Wayne Smith assisted by
Travis Lyndon. The second period was
scoreless but in the third, the Mustangs pull-
ed away with three goals. Dean Armstrong'
led the attack with two goals while Shawn
Shaeffer scored the single. Drawing assists
on the goals was Randy Marriage, Travis
Lyndon, Scott Gilders and Sean Van
Dongen.
Tavistock 5 - Clinton 1
The Mustangs played at home on
February 28 against Tavistock, but the
home crowd didn't help them in this game
that ended up 5-1 for Tavistock.
Tavistock opened up a two goal lead in the
first period before the Mustangs got on the
board with what was to be their only goal of
the game. Wayne Smith scored the lone
Clinton goal asaisled ly Travis Lyndon and
Scott Gliders. Tavistock scored two in the
second period and added one more in the
third to take the win.
Tavistock 8 - Clinton 4
After playing to a 3-3 tie after two periods,
the Mustangs couldn't harness the
Tavistock attack as they struck for five
goals in the third period to hand the
Mustangs an 8-4 loss.
Wayne Smith lead the team with two goals
and one assist with Dean Armstrong posting
another two goal performance. Travis Lyn-
don had two assists while Sean Van Dongen,
Shawn Shaeffer, Brad Hymers and Ron
McKay posted singles.
Mr. Marriage says the Mustangs will try
to win a couple of their last three games and
hopefully play a spoiler role in their remain-
ing games against Grand Valley and Seafor-
th.
Jr. D Draw
The winner of the recent Junior D Booster
Club draw for $100 was Jim Medd of RR 1
Blyth.
Clinton Pee Wees outhustle Mitchell
CLINTON -The WOAA playoffs commenced
with CLinton meeting their arch rivals Mit-
chell. The last three gaines between these
two teams all ended regulation time with
Mitchell scrambling back from a deficit to
tie a tiring Clinton squad and force overtime
which ended with two ties and one win for
Mitchell.
In this game, the Clinton squad played a
well-rounded game to defeat Mitchell 9-5 in
a game on March 1.
Clinton 9 - Mitchell 5
Mitchell struck early when after the first
face-off, a scramble in the neutral zone end-
ed with a Mitchell player flipping a high shot
into the Clinton end. Goalie Chris Hoggarth
was unable to control the bouncing puck and
a speedy Mitchell forward batted the puck
in. Clinton was not intimidated by this early
goal and applied a great deal of pressure on
the Mitchell defenders until the middle of
the period when Brad Jewitt loosed a hard
shot from the point which was deflected into
the net by Andrew Dykstra.
' Clinton went ahead with just over a
minute left to play when Greg Taylor fed a
perfect pass to Jason Fleet just before the
blue line. Jason put on a perfect move to
skate around the lone defender and cleanly

front of the Mitchell net. In a tremendous se-
cond effort Chipchase slid the puck across,
McCone flipped the puck up, and Dykstra
tapped it home.
Mitchell's second power play goal
resulted when a defenseman's clearing pass
was intercepted by Dietz who then had an
open shot at the net. Goalie I-Ioggarth played
the break -away well, but Dietz fired the
puck just under the crossbar.
The period ended with Clinton having a
'two goal lead and the memory of Mitchell's
previous comeback efforts.
Clinton came out in the third period
skating as hard as they had in the first, they
were determined that Mitchell would not
catch them again. After three minutes of
sustained Clinton pressure, Gavin Hunter,
from Fleet and Taylor, was able to bounce
one behind the goalie. The eight goal was
scored when McCone from the corner
threaded the needle and passed the puck
from the corner to Dykstra who backhanded
the puck into the net.
The final Mitchell goal came when a Clin-
ton forward failed to clear the puck in front
of His own net and left the puck teed up for
the_ Mitchell playej to golf in.
With just a minute to go, Clinton proved
that they can score at the end of the game,
too. Hunter placed a break -away pass on to
the stick of Fleet who proceeded to score a
picture perfect goal. The game ended with
Clinton winning 9-5.
This win was truly a team effort by all of
the boys. They produced the best passing
that they have displayed all year,,All ala for-
wards had at least one goal and one assist.
The defense played their positions well and
did not allow the speedy Mitchell team room
to manoeuver.
The second game in the series played on
Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Mitchell. The score
was unavailable at press time.
ATV Sno-Cross successful
