British Peace Budget Brought Down by Chancellor of the Exchequer. London, April 24.—The budget, ;Which was introduced in the House of Commons yesterday, shows an es- ,imated expenditure for 1003-08 of $719,770,080. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, !lir. Ritchie, fixed the national debt Charge at 5135,000,000, of which $31,500,000 is available for the sinking fund. The estimated reven- ue on the existing basis of taxation is $778,850,000, giving an available surplus of $54,080,000. Grain Duty Abolished. Mr. Ritchie's proposals included the following: The abolition of the duty on grain. Four pence (8 cents) taken off in- come tax. The taxes on sugar and coal are unchanged. Grain Tax lnfamons. Sir lVillianl Vernon -Harcourt ;(Lib.), former Chancellor of the Exchequer, followed.
