Too much pressure
The regular season of baseball is windin,
down, football is picking up and everyone's
talking hockey. I'm either getting old or the
sporting seasons are changing a lot quicker.
Before sitting down to write this, I tried to
contemplate what the upcoming National
Hockey League ( NHL) season would be like.
I hate to admit it, but I am a Toronto Maple
Leaf fan - a dying breed that is soon to
become extinct unless the club turns around
in the upcoming sepson. But there may be
hope. , •
The Leaf's have selected Wendel Clark as
their number one draft pick, paying hirn an
unprecedented $600,000. The closest any
Toronto rookie has come to this mark is
$300,000. Gary Nyland received' this amount
in the 1982 draft. „
Playing hockey in Toronto is a high
pressure job to begin with. The fans expect a
lot, the media expects a lot and so does
management. But being the highest paid
rookie in the history of the club is going to
add to the pressure.
The 18 -year-old is quoted as saying, "The
pressure I'll he nlavinp with is what Tont nn
myself. I'll just go out and do my best; H it
isn't good enough, there's nothing I can do
about it."
Good attitude, but can a rookie, really
ignore the publicity when he •akes
command performances at social functions,
or when the media starts building up or
deflating his hopes?
If it wasn't for the manner in which Wayne
Gretzky has handled his success, I'd say
definitely no. But Gretzky has shown that it
can be done. Granted he did have a few bad
months when he started bad mouthing the
reer,rer,-i fhpr 'rnn grit him hack on
track.
If any rookie can help the Leafs, it may be
Clarki,He was, on Canada's gold medal team
in th World Junior Championships .last
year, scoring 32 goals, 55 assists,and taking
253 penalty minutes. He's a skating
defenceman-forward who likes body contact
so he should fit into the Leafs style of play.
The Leafs are rebuilding. and these days
you have to pay .a hefty sum in order to get
players with quality. Clark may be a first
step, but let's hope he is able to live up to the
Leafs' expectations.

"Kent's main task is to develop pro-
grams," said Mr. Duguay.
Kent, who is employed with the town for 10
weeks, says "there's never a dull moment in
this office."
Colleen DeJong has been employed as the
recreation office secretary under the Sum-
mer Employment Experience Development
(SEED) grant offered by Canada Employ-
ment and Immigration. The town receives a
75 per cent subsidy for her wages over a four
month period.
Mr. Duguay has found her assistance "in-
valuable" and Colleen will take her ex-
perience to a job with the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculutre and Food in September.
Debbie Leigh Smith and Lynn MacDonald
were hired under a Ministry of Citizenship
and Culture Experience '85 grant. Through 41
the grant, they were able to work for 10'
•weeks and the town received 62.5 per cent
subsidy.
Debbie Leigh and Lynn have been bbsy
working with the Clinton Playground, Sum-
mer Fun Olympics, organizing trips to the
Blyth Festival and helping at the children's
performances.
"We have tried to create another division.
We have playground, pool; sports and
maintenance, but now we have the arts," '
explained Mr. Duguay.
Both students feel the experience they.
have gained this summer will be beneficial
in the future.
"I like working with kids and this is the
type of field I'll be going into," said Debbie
Leigh. Lynn is planning on taking an early
childhood education course so the work she
has done this summer will assist in her
studies.
Robert Dupee was hired under the
Minisitry of Citizenship and Culture Youth
Corp grant. For this grant, the ministry pro-
vides 100 per cent funding.
"Robert is the auditorium assistant. His
job is to set up, clean up as well as assist
with the summer programs, community
events and the arts," said Mr. Duguay.
Tim Craig and Shane Carter were also
hired under the SEED grant. Their job is to
assist at the public facilities and special
events. ,
"They were a tremendous help," stated
Mr. Duguay. "With their (the seven
students) help, we were able to add to our
programs."
