• Feeling great at 90
CLINTON - Allen.. Betties remembers
when a farmer did his daily chores by hand.
There were no tractors, no combines or
automatic milkers. Just a farmer, his sons
and whatever help he could roundup:
Allen Betties- turned 90 -years -old on '
August 16. He's as sharp and as active as
those who are years younger.
••I feel. better now than I have for'the-Iast
15 years," Mr. Betties said.. •
Mr. Betties was born in Goderich
Township.and lived on a farrn with his .fami-
ly: He helped take care of the cows, pigs and.
hens as well as work ,in the fields. It is this
hard work .that Mr. Settles credits his
longevity too. • •
"We did everythirg by hand then. We
didn't' have the tractors and expensive.
machinery • that there is today,," he said:
"Things are advancing pretty fast."
Mr. Bettles.and his Wife Annie have been
married for 67 years. Mrs. Betties is also a '
Goderich Township native but the. couple
moved to -their Clinton home 11 years ago.
Their only son, Alvin, is now working the
farm which has been in t.he.family for three
generations:
To keep busy, Mr. Betties tends the
flowers and garden around their. home,
reads a lot and does some visiting. He still
has his drivers license and has been driving
for 61 years.
One of the benefits of living a long and
healthly life is being, able to watch your
children and grandchildren grow up and Mr.
Betties has been fortunate enough to see his
.four grandchildren" grow from babies. to
adults.
He has one grandson, Bruce, and three •
granddaughters, Marie Fitzsimons, Peggy
Ann McLeod and Mary Jean Baer.
The. Betties, family seems to be blessed
with longevity and good health as Mr. Bet-
ties' sister is 94 -years -old.

Welock engine to power their factory:
