BLYTH The show reveals nothing but
professionalism with paintings by Robert
Bateman, George McLean, • William
Creighton Ron Kingswood. and George
Allen. The exquisite paintings hang perfect-
ly with the lighting showing off the paintings
to their fullest.. Art fans come from as far
away as Peterborough just to see the pain-
tings at the Blyth Festival Art Exhibition,
Out of The Fields, and no one would suspect
the last minute problems the gallery had to
overcome to make the exhibit a hit.
Joan Chandler, the Blyth Gallery Visual
Arts Director, put a year's worth of plann-
ing into the exhibit, but last minute com-
plications made her wonder if the show was
going to go.
"I felt the exhibition was thought out and
planned extremely well. Over a year ago I
was at a friend's dinner party in Owen
•Sound and while there, I asked George
McLean who he thought would be wor-
thwhile to put in the show," she explained.
After hearing names of top painters such
as Ron Kingswood and Robert Bateman,
Mrs. Chandler thought it was "ludicrous.
How could I ask them to come to a little
theatre in Blyth?"
After talking with each painter, Mrs.
Chandler found that they were all very
agreeable so the next step was to get in-
surance to cover the work while in the
gallery.
The insurance was the first of several pro-
blems organizers had to overcome., With an
estimated $500,000 worth of paintings hang-
ing on the walls, the insurance would have
been sky high. '
."The insurance company said it would
cost a fortune to insure and we would re-
. quire a security guard but the gallery
budget would have been gobbled up by pay-
ing a security guard. Then they suggested
reducing the price of the show, which we did
by more than half, dropping only a few 'pain-
tings," said Mrs. Chandler.
However, because the • paintings are
"world treasures," it was decided a profes-
sional guard was not needed if someone was
to stay in the banding all night.
"We're still looking for voluAteers. We put
a sponge on the floor, a bed round bring a
book:..carnp out at the Blyth Memorial
Hall," laughed Mrs. Chandler. "It's been a
novel experience."
Actors have also taken an interest,
volunteering their time to protect the pain-`
tings.
But the insurance, has not been the only
problem the gallery has encountered.
Another was getting the Bateman paintings.
"I had been dealing with Bateman and not
his agent in Florida. We (Mr. Bateman and
Mrs. Chandler) had agreed on six paintings
but his agent had booked some of those pain-
tings for another show. The agent- apologiz-
ed profusely because she hadn't
realized...That's what happens when you're
dealing with major people," said Mrs.
Chandler who did receive four paintings.
Once this situation was straightened out,
another problem arose.
',From way back we knew there would' be
' a problem getting the work here. Bateman,
was moving to B.C. so we had to find a way
to get his paintings here from Mississauga.
We phoned couriers • that we thought were
trusty worthy people and one company
agreed to handle the job at a reasonable
cost. But two days before the opening, the
insurance company said it would have to go
in three shipments," Mrs. Chandler said.
Three people with vehicles large enough
to carry the paintings were found. One was
an actor, another a visual arts person and
the third was Mrs. Chandler's husband.
However, the problem was not yet solved.
"'This is really bizarre. As soon as we
opened the door to the van that was carrying
the largest picture, the door fell off and in
another car we couldn't get the window to go
up and it was raining out," she said.
'1'he paintings eventually arrived in'Blyth
undamaged, but they have'to be returned in
three shiptnents when the exhibition is over.

Financial matters are always a concern
when a budget is involved, and since the
$1,500 insurance costs deflated the budget,
the gallery is looking for donations.
"One of our major donations was received
from Glenyce and Dick Snell. 'They. were
pleased to see the paintiings coming here,"
Mrs, Chandler said.
Other ways of raising money has been to
sell raffle tickets, on a cushion or a trip to
Toronto.
Despite the earlier problems, the exhibi- -
tion is going well. Approximately 200 people
carne out for the opening on August 16.
"Usually when the show begins everyone
clears out of the gallery to see the perfor-
mance; but the people didn't leave. We an-
nounced that the show was on but they had
come to see the paintings:" she said.
Out of The Fields will be on exhibit until
September 14.
