BLYTH - It took six :models and hours of
work, but set designer Jules Tonus came
through with reconstructable cars and a
garage that can be taken on tower.
The Blyth Festival's• highly successful
GarriSou's Garage will go on tour
throughout Southwestern Ontario and New
Brunswick this fall, playing in theatres of
various sizes. For this reason, and for
travelling purposes, the set had to be con-
densed.
Garrison's Garage has a unique set. It
consists of tire racks and all the items found
in a garage, including two cars. These cars
are not fabricated out of cd-rdboard, but are
cars which once drove on Huron County
roads. '
When Mr. Tonus was first asked to make
the play's set smaller he was "shocked and
happy."
"I was astounded at first, but it was such a
big hit ( opening the Blyth Festival season
last year) that it should be toured;" said Mr.
Tonus.
The Toronto free-lance designer did not
construct the original set for touring and has
had to compromise so smaller theatres
could accommodate the set. •
"It would have been nice to know ahead of
time that the play wouldgo on 'tour, but who
knew it would -be such 'a hit," commented
Mr. Tonus. -
"I took out a tire' rack, which means one
wall will be eliminated. It'll be a bit of a
compromise, but nothing that people will
notice a lot...some designers would cringe at
the idea but it's either compromise or the
smaller theatres won't get a chance to see
it," he said.
The major obstacle in the set has been the
Honda Civic. The Honda, and the front end
of a Jaguar, were gutted for last year's* per-
formances. This year the Honda will be
made shorter so it will fit in the smaller
theatres and will dismantle into -approx-
'', imately 20 pieces.
"Last year, we used a forklift to get it on
stage (at Blyth), this year we're going to
take apart the quarter panels, take out the
windows and about 20 other pieces so the car
can be bolted back together every night,"
• explained Mr. Tonus'. "It's going 'to be a
tremendous amount of work, but it has to
be."
Another featurethat makes the Honda
adaptable to the'smaller theatres is the fact
that it will be cut by the windshield and the
door lines so it can be made shorter.
Mr. Tonus estimates that it willtake ap-
proximately five people to arrange the set.
' Providing helpful }hints, and anything else
Mr. Tonus may need, has been Dave Roy,
Ideal Supply and Joe Chatterton.

This is not 'the : first set Mr., Tonus has
designed to tour, but it is the first set that
will tour that was not initially designed for
that purpose.
"The sheer magnitude of carrying a
garage around Canada is 'something,' he
commented. "And it's a realistic design
with cars as well." -
Garrison's Garage will open in Blyth on
August 27 and run until September 14. The
tour will begin in mid-September.

Jules Tonus put a lotof time and effort into the original set for Garrison's Garage but has
been asked to condense the set so it can be taken on tour. After six models, and countless
hours of work, Jules came up with a new set. -( Anne Narejko photo)
