WINGHAM - The Huron County Health,
Unit and Conestoga College of Applied Arts
and Technology are sponsoring a Multiple
Sclerosis. (MS) workshop on October 5 at
F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham.
Coping•with Multiple Sclerosis is a session
designed for people who have recently been
diagnosed with MS and for their health care
providers. •
Seminars will be lead by: fir. A. Upton,
Professor of Medicine and director of
neurology and'epilepsy clinics at McMaster
University. Dr. Upton has reviewed patients
in MS clinics since 1975 'and has published a
number of articles on the subject; Mary
Ciotti, social worker at McMaster Universi-
ty; Barbara Neufeld, Registered Nurse, co-
ordinator of the MS Clinic, , Chedoke-
McMaster Hospital. She has experience in
the clinic's team development, patient, care
co-ordination and . educational program
development areas. Mrs. Neufeld has exten-
sive experience at the local and provincial
MS Society levels. '
The workshop has three objectives. The
first is to consider the different emotional
responses that occur in a family when a
member has a physical disability or chronic
illness. The second is to explore and ex-
change ideas on how the handicapped per-
son and the family members deal with the
kinds of stress imposed on them by a
physical disability or chronic illness. The
final objective is to discuss the most effec-
tive ways of coping with these responses and
how to obtain help in the community.
There will also be displays of relevant
equipment, medical supplies and services.
Activities get underway at 8:45 a.m. on
October 5. Registration deadline is
September 14.
