Charles Murdoch's directing debut at
Huron Country Playhouse exudes
confidence for great things, but there is no
sparkle in the opening night production.
'Star Spangled, Girl', ' a Neil Simon
comedy, is typical of that American
playwright's talents in that it is funny and
witty. The only down note is that the play
takes place in 1966, almost 20 years ago and
unfortunately or fortunately, depending on
your point of view, times have changed.
The story plot follows two idealistic young
men putting out an underground magazine.
Andy Hobart, played by Derek Boyes is
the administrator of the magazine and has
many humorous lines in his attempts to
brush off bill collectors. Boyes delivers this
character in a no nonsense approach
without the sexual overtones which could be
present.
Then there is the magazines's only writer,
Norman Cornell, played by Randy Hughson.
Under many pseudonyms, Norman lashes
out at the establishment until he is smitten
by the love bug. Then, as most writers
experience at some time, he has writer's
block.
The writer's main distraction comes in the
shapely form of Sophie Rauschmeyer,
portrayed by Arlene Mazerrole. She limits
her full experience to the rage which must
be directed at this persistent young man
who has just lost her her job and her
apartment. She also needs to relax and be
less stilted. .
The characters play well together, but
Hughson needs more practice in ad libbing
physical gestures. He has the high strung
temp, erment down pat, but it comes across
less smoothly than it could.

Scene from Star-spangled girl
He also needs to be reminded that there is
a balcony in the theatre and the audience
there deserves to see more than the top of
his head.
If there was no humor and the play was
written by anyone other than Neil Simon, it
wouldn't work, especially with a 1985
audience.
The young woman, Sophie, is patriotic to
her country, so patriotic that any criticism
such as that written in the magazine is
considered unjust. Back in the sixties it was

cool to be radical, but now, American
patriotism is so strong that one doubts if this
play would be successful in that country.
Also as typifies the sixties and the
dawning of the feminist movement, the
woman works for low wages fetching coffee,
making meals and is mainly expected to
smile and look pretty.
However, director Murdoch overlooks
these flaws in society then and now and puts
together a good production in a super set.
Star Spangled Girl plays until Aug. 17.
