It was a little singular that two clergymen
of this town have the anniversaries of their
pastorates on the first Sunday in August -
• Rev. A.Stewart entered upon his eighth
Aik year, Rev. W.Craig upon his fifth year - on
yr Sunday August 2.
•Auctioneer T.M. Carling of this town, left
yesterday for St.Thomas having been sum-,
.
moned to attend as a witness on the inquest
held as to the cause of the accident whereby
Mrs -Sanders and child and Mr. Dempsey
lost their lives through being run over by a
train on Clinton's civic holiday. Mr. Carling
being on the' lookout for the St. Thomas race
track, where the accident' occurred, with the
object of seeing " Gbderich Chief" stallion,
• if possible, took more than casual notice just
. about that time. Mr. Carling, we
understand, is positive that he heard the
whistle blow., •
' • Unfortunate Accident - On Monday even-
• ing His Honor Judge Dartnell, whilst at-
tempting to jump from .the yacht Oriole,
then/lying-A Port Whitby to the shore, and
where some of his friends had been visiting,
missed. his foot, and his coat 'catching on the
vessel, he fell, bruising himself severely and
severing several.of the sinews of the leg. It
is fearted he will be-confiried to the house for
a month or two. - Whitby Chronicle. The
gentleman is the brother of Mrs. R.M.
f Lacey, of this.town; and we notice by city
papers that he is the president of the Ontario
Cricket Association and was to have .been
the spokesman for his fellow members when
a community of them received the Marquis
of Lansdowne at the Queen's in Toronto last
Saturday, but was prevented.' by the acci-
dent.

A unique tea party was held on Friday
evening when the .ladies of the W.C.T.U.
entertained all the elderly ladies of the town
at the home of Mr.and Mrs. W.S. Harland.
There ,were between thirty and forty guests,
consisting of all the elderly ladies who were
able to leave their homes, several of them
having passed by ten years or more the
allotted life of man; the oldest being Mrs.
Pode who is over eighty-seven. The guests
were sent for in carriages and taken home
after the tea. All seemed to enjoy the tea and
it is needless to say that all were well looked
after by the hostesses. Revs. Dr. Stewart J.
Greene, 11. Newcombe and J.E. Ford, and
Mayor Taylor were present, and each made
• appropriate remarks. The mayor said
among other things that .he was pleased to
note the influence of the W.C.T:U. upon the,
morals of the town. Prof. Brown was also
present and he with others gave some
musical selections on the piano. Some selec-
tions were also given on a phonograph, all of
which was much appreciated.

• Mrs. Jean Kyle and Miss Jeanne Mitchell
left for Winnipeg on Saturday morning by
way of Sarnia, where they took the steamer
Noronic to Port Arthur. Jeanne has made
her home with her aunt, Mrs. Kyle for three
years and will be missed by her playmates
and in church and school concert work.
Clinton's good bail team was not good
enough to defeat Lucknow on Monday even-
ing and lost a close decision by a score of 5-4.
In the ninth, Carrick tried to steal home
from third, the bases being loaded with 2
out. Jblinson for Clinton was at bat with 2
balls the count. Carrick was nipped at the
plate and a grgat rally went for lack.
Hawkins, Clinton's :centre fielder, playing
short, made a wild pitch to first and Hovey
made a bad error on second. Even with
several errors the game was close and ex-
citing.

problem for the Clinton Fire Department as
they rushed pellmell after the engine when
the call Fire Chief Grant Rath ,made a re-
quest following the fire that those in-
teresting in attending such alarms, be
careful not to obstruct the work of the
firemen.
• At last night's (Wednesday) meeting of
th0 Clinton Collegiate Institute Board it was
decided to hold off the official opening of.the
new wing of the school until late October.
