MAIN STREET BLYTH
Lise Dufour, right, travelled from Montreal, Quebec to experience life in Southwestern
Ontario. She applied for an educational, exchange as did Leah Richmond, left, and the
two were paired for a week in Blyth. Although there was a language barrier between the
two girls, hard work, time and sign language turned them into good friends. ( James
Friel photo)
Bringing cultures together
BLYTH - Two girls from vastly different
cultures and with the 'barrier of two
separate languages between them lay on
'their stomachs playing Battleship and giggl-'
ing.
Leah is the daughter of Olwen and Keithy
Richmond, a student of Blyth Public School
and lucky enough to have the unique ex-
perience hosting a French Canadian girl for
a week.
Lise Dufour is from Montreal and had the
' scary experience of leaving her home city
and provi ce to visit the Blyth girl.
And the chance for these twovery dif-
ferent and yet very similar g.rls to meet is
what SEVEC, the Society, of Educational
Visits ai1d Exchanges in Canada, is all
about.
SEVEC provides the venue for students to
travel to another part of the country to ex-
perience and gain some understanding of
the life the residents of that particular area
lead. The program has been providing this
opportunity since '1981; it is a merger of
groups which have been operating since
1936.
HAPPY 80th BIRTHDAY
Sid McCullough
on August 6
Love and Best Wishes
from his wife, Marg,
two daughters, Margaret
and Shirley, sons-in-law
Ivan and Bruce 'and
Grandchildren, Cheryl,
Steven and Jeremy.
I The organization "twins them (par-
ticipants) as best they can," said Olwen.
"They look at their interests • and ages.
Lise's parents phoned us a couple of times
and the girls wrote letters before Lise came
here." Of course there was a little trepida-
tion on ,both sides but getting comfortable
with the new situation has everything flow-
ing smoothly.
' And with all this preparation, the week
long one way exchange is working out very
well. "They're getting along great," said
Olwen. "Communicating is a lot of sign
language and speaking slowly but it's going
really well."
The French teacher from the Blyth school
visited for a conversation and presented
Lise with a school t -shirt.
It was easy to see the two had become
good friends in the short time they had
together. When the time for a picture came
their looks at each other and the laughing
demonstrated the bond the two had
established. ' I
