ver_ ypr Fnced.Sadler was named top
manen July 28 after chalking up two first,
tw seconds and two-thirds in seven starts,
to win Clinton Raceway's Third Annual
Driver's Contest, capping the most suc-
cessful day in:the track's hnstary,
Sadler "Clinched the win in a heart -
stopping charge to the wire with Will Wyn
Willy in the eleventh race, seizing victory at
thelast moment after a day -long battle with
Dave Wall and Ray McLean for the all-
expenSe-paid trip to Las Vegas, traditional-
ly donated by Clinton -Raceway to the con-
test winner. Mk. Wall won the trip in both
.983 and 1984, but this time tied with
cLean for second place with a score of 150
points each, to Sadler's 174.
Sadler's prize was presented by the
Honorable Murray Elston, Ontario Minister
of Health, who was on hand with Mrs. Elston
for the occasion, to take part in the track's
annual Hospital Day benefit. The Elstons
were accompanied by Clinton Public
Hospital Administrator Dan Steyn, who
made the gift presentations to Mr. Wall and
Mr. McLei-:n for their joint second place
wins.
Raceway Committee Day Chairman
Clarence Denomme presented the other six
drivers in the contest with driving gloves,
courtesy of The Old Mill - Snell Enterprises.
Mr. Elston and Mr. Steyn made a spec-
tacular entrance to the winners' circle as
;passengers in an elegant white carriage
drawn by a`hi h -stepping hackney driven by
Bob French of Mitchell, with his son, David,
both in full coaching regalia. The French
family had given their rig and their time to
the raceway as a most generous donation to
the hospital benefit, and were given a stan-
ding ovation by the capacity crowd,.
delighted by the spectacle.
After the races, more 'than 450 people sat
down to the annual beef barbecue in the
Clinton arena, prepared .by Seaforth's
master chefs Ron Williamson and Lamont.
The meal was served by volunteers from the
hospital staff and board of governors.
Ank All profits, $3,314.64, from the memorable
IIIPlay will go to the Clinton Public Hospital
Building Fund, after the Raceway Commit-
tee's weekly meeting on July 30.
Besides the record-breaking crowd. on
hand, the mutual handle broke all "previous
records at the Clinton track, as ardent fans
bet $91,536 for the day. Even the track
record came close to being toppled in the
eleventh race, the prestigious $3,000 Flem-
ing Feed Mill Invitation pace, as Ray
McLean piloted the Delaware horse, Spr-
ingback, to a 2:00 flat win.
The track record stands at 1:59, set last
August 26 by Kevdor at the Ontario Sires
Stakes for 3 -year-old pacing colts, with Ken
Hardy on the bike.
Race secretary. Ian Fleming deserves a
lot of credit for putting together the July 28,
card, matching some of the area's best
horses in 11 of the best races ever seen in
Clinton. Delighted fans responded with
noisy enthusiasm and the record-breaking
bet, and were in turn rewarded' with several
husky feature payoffs, including a stagger-
' ing Triactor win the third race, combining
Little Penny (Dave Wall), Royal J.R. (Fred
Sadler) and He's Special (Terry Kerr) to
pay $1,197 for a $2 bill.
Race fans are reminded that the Ontario
Sires Stakes 3 -year-old pacing fillies will
race in Clinton on August 11. Among them
will be the hometown favourite H.F: Alice,
owned by Bill Fleming v, Clinton and train,
ed by Butch Elliott. This gr€qt 'aal crt
Count - Karina Hanover iilly set an all-
Canadian,
llCanadian, all -age record of 1:57 2/5 for
mares on a half -mile track at Flamboro
Downs July 13.
H,F. Alice then went. on to win her OSS
Division at Greenwood Raceway in Toronto
in 1:59 3/5 on July 22; and again won the
first elimination heat of her division of the
Rothmans Summertime Championship
Stakes in Toronto on July 27 in a sizzling 1:57
3/5. Later that evening, she came back to
place fourth in 1:59 flat in the final heat,
