Sports
Relaxation!
Each week, this space is set aside for me
to explain the benefits of sports, those who
do well in.sports, or some intersting sporting
activity. This week. I'm going to break from
II "the regular routine and write about the
exact opposite - relaxation.
There's only so much exercise, work and
other strenuous activities one can take part
in. Once I've reached my limit, the old body
starts to ache. Even the simple every day
routines become a a pain in the neck.
The usual. method of rejuvenating myself
is spending a quietweekend in my
apartment. By quiet I mean sleeping until 1
p.m., stumbling into the shower and then
crashing on the couch until supper. After
supper, I find the couch once again, watch
the Saturday Night Movie and, if I haven't
already fallen asleep, I jump into bed only to
repeat the routine on Sunday.
Well, this weekend I felt like I needed to be
energized. I had planned to start Friday
night, but a visiting •brother changed my
mind and my plans: •
I didn't have the opportunity to sleep
Saturday away, in fact I was up early, but at
3 p.m. I got my much needed relaxation.
A few friends and I had planned to meet at
the Goderich beach for an afternoon. in the
sun. Normally I'm not the type that can sit
and relax on the beach but this time I.did
From the stands

just that.
I discovered that lying on the beach,
catching some rays and gossiping is a more
enjoyable way to relax then sleeping the day
away. Surethe sun makes you tired, but the
following day I felt great, plus I have the
beginnings of a tan.
We,didn't spend the entire time sitting. We
threw a football and strolled along the
beach. A day at the beach just isn't complete
unless you have a tiny bit of exercise.
There's something about the beach that
makes everything seem fun. I think I could
have taken a typewriter down to the beach
and it wouldn't have seemed like work.
People in Bayfield, Goderich and the
surrounding areas are fortunate to have
clean beaches and water so close. I grew up
in Brantford where we had to drive for a
good 45 minutes to an hour to go for a swim
in the lake. Unless you wanted to swim in the
Grand River, but I wouldn't suggest that.
I lived in Goderich for two summers and
must have visited the beach a total of 20
times. About 14 of the 20 times were during
the first summer, but the novelty soon wore
off.
When you stop to think about it, there's a
lot to do at the beach. Windsurfing is one of
the most popular, water sports right now,
and there's the old time favorites like
Frisbee and volleyball, and of course,
swimming.
For those who are like me and need a little
relaxation every now and again, the beach
also provides that.
This area has been blessed with natural
recreational facilities, let's use them.
