Mombetibip, in .an organization means
many things to many people. Tos0w9,,it is
the deep sense of satisfaction that emerges
frorn -helping others less fortunate. -To
others, it's the warm friendships. that are
formed from belonging, it's • the rewards
that come from personal improvement
through association with others, and the
pleasure derived from participation in the
social events.

south of the Goderich harbour on 142; Con
1 cattle lake bank where a deep tame -rims
down to the lake, Saltwas evaporated in
large kettles andlater,nnd more efficiently,
in pans over wood fires.
Salt was shipped from dock just below'
the well, transported to a wharf on a tram-
way through the eavine. In good Weather,
the salt was loaded on" a ship destined for
Chicago, 1V1ilwaulte,e, or. Detroit. The inter-
national works and Hawley's, also owned by
Mr. McEwan put out 600 barrels per day, the
greatest production of any saltworks in
Canada at the gine, according to 'Memories
of Goderich'.
Belden's Historical Atlas of Huron Coun-
ty, 1879, describes the salt well as being over
1200 feet (360 sm) deep.. The first layer of
salt was found at 1050 feet (315 m) and then
100 feet (30 m) of limestone was penetrated
to reach the second layer of, salt, of an
unknown thickness in, 1872. The Interna-
tional had four pans, about 110 by30 feet and

thousands of cords of wood, from the 1041
farmers.
Brine was created by Pouring water on the
rock salt, shaking up the water, and pump-
ing the brine. to the surface., The brine was
then dehydrated in the pans.
The price of salt in 1895 was::
100 bags in a barrel (280 lbs.) . . . . $L65
Loose salt, per barrel (280 lbs.).. .85 cents
Granulated Cheese or Butter (211 lbs.) .60

A car of salt could be from 12 to 15 tons(ll to
14T). and could be made up of different kinds
of salt. The salt works operated until Mr.
McEwan's death in 1904.
