The inter- national works and Hawley's, also owned by Mr. McEwan put out 600 barrels per day, the greatest production of any saltworks in Canada at the gine, according to 'Memories of Goderich'. Belden's Historical Atlas of Huron Coun- ty, 1879, describes the salt well as being over 1200 feet (360 sm) deep.. The first layer of salt was found at 1050 feet (315 m) and then 100 feet (30 m) of limestone was penetrated to reach the second layer of, salt, of an unknown thickness in, 1872.
